Irvine Porcelain Veneers for a Sensational Smile Makeover

Irvine porcelain veneers

After Laynie’s smile makeover with porcelain veneers Dr. Huefner took these portraits of Laynie and her beautiful new smile.

Laynie, a beautiful young lady, had just graduated from college.  She was very concerned about the appearance of her teeth and just about to start a new career, this was the time for her to finally do something about it.  When she came to see Dr. Huefner for her cosmetic dentistry consultation, Laynie and Dr. Huefner discussed her teeth and smile in detail and Laynie narrowed it down to correcting four things:

  • Laynie didn't like either the way her teeth or gums looked. She came to Dr. Huefner to discuss all her options with cosmetic dentistry.

Laynie didn’t like either the way her teeth or gums looked. She came to Dr. Huefner to discuss all her options with cosmetic dentistry.

    she wanted whiter color teeth

  • her teeth looked short, and she wanted longer teeth
  • she had gingivitis, thus her gums were red and swollen
  • her left central incisor tooth was much darker than all the rest

Dr. Huefner recommended a plan of treatment that would solve all the problems that Laynie wanted corrected.  First, she would see Dr. Huefner’s dental hygienist and have her teeth cleaned and her gums treated.  By doing that and improving her oral hygiene, the redness of her gums would disappear and instead have a healthy, pink color.

irvine porcelain veneers and laser gum reshaping with dental gum laser

By treating her gingivitis and then doing some minor gum reshaping with the dental gum laser Laynie got healthy looking pink gums and teeth that weren’t too short. By bleaching Laynie’s lower teeth and then placing porcelain veneers on eight of her upper teeth. Laynie got the beautiful smile with white, even teeth that she wanted.

Second, since Laynie wanted longer teeth Dr. Huefner would do some minor laser gum reshaping with his dental gum laser.  This would eliminate some of the “gummy smile” that she had and give her more normal length front teeth.

Third, Laynie would have her lower teeth bleached.

Finally, Dr. Huefner would place porcelain veneers on eight of Laynie’s upper front teeth.  By doing the last two things Laynie would have the whiter, more attractive teeth that she wanted and they would all be the same color.  There were no major problems with Laynie’s lower teeth, so the bleaching the lower teeth by themselves would suffice to overcome the problem she had with yellow lower teeth.

BL2 shade porcelain veneers

Laynie’s smile makeover looked terrific! A beautiful, healthy and natural looking smile for a stunning young lady. Laynie’s total treatment time took just about a month.

Laynie accepted Dr. Huefner’s treatment plan and her treatment went as planned.  It took just over a month’s time to accomplish all treatment and the result of Laynie’s Irvine porcelain veneers treatment was amazing.  An absolutely beautiful smile for a very attractive young lady was achieved!

Worn old looking smile rejuvenated with porcelain veneers by DrHuefner

younger looking smile with porcelain veneers

Photo below: Roselyn’s teeth were very worn. She is only forty, but her teeth looked twice that age. Also, she wanted whiter teeth and for her teeth to be straight, with no gaps inbetween them.
Photo above: Dr. Huefner made ten porcelain veneers for Roselyn. He made her veneers longer than her worn teeth were, about the length they were when she was a teenager. Roselyn chose the color she wanted for her new teeth, a BL1 tooth shade, which is one of the whitest natural looking shades available for porcelain veneers and crowns. Also, Dr. Huefner made her teeth straight with the porcelain veneers. She was very happy to loose the crooked, old looking smile and loved the more attractive and youthful looking smile that Dr. Huefner made for her.

Roselyn, a very active and young-at-heart lady who just turned forty was feeling that her appearance was getting away from her.  “When I smile my teeth are so short and worn that I feel it makes me look really old,” she told Dr. Huefner.  Upon looking at Roselyn’s teeth it was quite obvious what she was referring to.  Her teeth were quite worn, something we might normally expect from someone twice her age.

“I see exactly what you are telling me,” Dr. Huefner told her.  “Yes, your teeth are extremely worn.  You know, if you keep this up you are going to wear your teeth down to little stubs.”  Dr. Huefner went on to ask Roselyn if there were any other things that concerned her?

“Well, the color of my teeth are really dark and discolored.  I’ve always wanted clean, white teeth.  Is that something that you can fix for me?” She asked Dr. Huefner.

Dr. Huefner answered Roselyn that before he started recommending any treatment he needed to know if there was anything else with her teeth that she wanted him to address?  Roselyn said, “One more thing.  My teeth are crooked and spaced.  I feel like maybe the best way for me to go is just pull ’em all out and give me dentures.”

Roselyn’s last statement really shocked Dr. Huefner!  “No Roselyn, we certainly don’t have to do that.  We can fix the three things that concern you with porcelain veneers, a very common cosmetic dental treatment that we do today.  It will make your teeth longer, and I can make them the same length they were for you when you were a teenager.  Also, we can make your veneers white and in fact, you can choose the color we make your teeth.  And lastly, we can make your teeth straight and even, as if your had braces. But we can do all this in just under a month’s time,” Dr. Huefner told Roselyn.

She was amazed.  She couldn’t believe that she could go from an old looking smile to a beautiful, younger looking smile with porcelain veneers and that her entire treatment could be done so quickly.  After discussing some other options and Dr. Huefner answering some more questions about porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry, Roselyn agreed to Dr. Huefner’s treatment recommendations.  And as Dr. Huefner had promised, Roselyn had her new, younger looking smile with porcelain veneers in less than a month’s time.

After her treatment was completed Dr. Huefner asked Roselyn how she felt about her new smile?  “I just love my new teeth, the veneers make me look so much younger than I looked before,” she told Dr. Huefner.

Life changing Irvine porcelain veneers for Danielle

irvine porcelain veneers

Below: Danielle was very displeased with her teeth, especially the ugly looking cap on her front tooth. She also wanted whiter teeth the weren’t crooked. Above: Dr. Huefner bleached her lower teeth, did some minor gum reshaping around several of her upper teeth to reduce some of the “gummyness”. He then replaced the ugly porcelain crown with a new all ceramic crown and placed nine porcelain veneers. The result Danielle was life changing.

Irvine Porcelain Veneers

Danielle, a thirty year old mother of two from Irvine, came to us very distraught about her teeth and smile.  A number of years ago she had fallen and chipped her right front tooth.  She told us that her dentist at the time “put a cap on it.”  However, she never liked the cap.  It didn’t match the rest of her teeth in color, and there was a dark black line were the gums were next to the tooth.  “I just hate smiling,” she said, “and I hate seeing my teeth in photos.  She went on to tell us how the tooth turned black and needed to have a root canal before the dentist would make the new crown for her.

We told Danielle that we were confidant that we could make her a new crown that would match her other teeth much better, and wouldn’t have any black line around the gums.  Danielle replied that was great, but even though the one front tooth was the thing she disliked the most about her teeth, she didn’t like her other teeth either.  They were all kind of yellow, she thought that she showed too much of her gums when she smiled and her teeth were crooked and out of proportion.  She told Dr. Huefner that she was desperate.  Was there anything he could do to completely redo her upper front teeth with cosmetic dentistry so that she could have confidence when she smiled?

After hearing Danielle’s expectation Dr. Huefner did a detailed analysis of her smile.  He measured her teeth and gums, looked carefully at her bite and how much of her teeth and gums showed when she smiled.  “I think today is your lucky day,” Dr. Huefner told Danielle.  “With some of the new techniques that cosmetic dentists are utilizing today I feel very confidant that we could do a smile makeover for you that would accomplish all of your goals.”

First, Dr. Huefner recommended that he do some laser reshaping of her gums.  That would reduce the amount of gums that she showed, and make the length of the teeth in much better proportion when she smiled.  Second, he recommended bleaching her lower teeth, which would enable him to use a much whiter color for her upper teeth.  But doing cosmetic dentistry on her upper front teeth was the key.  He would replace the one cap that she hated with an all ceramic cap.  On her other teeth he would place Irvine porcelain veneers.  At the end of treatment she would have white, straight teeth and a killer smile!

Dr. Huefner felt that Danielle’s “new teeth” would make a more attractive smile if they were a little longer. He planned on accomplishing this by doing some minor laser reshaping of her gums to remove the gummyness, and also making the new crown and porcelain veneers longer than her natural teeth were. This would give her a more normal overbite.

One of the things that Dr. Huefner stressed to Danielle was that he suggested making her “new teeth” a little longer, not only at the gum line with the dental laser, but also at the edges of the teeth.  Danielle had almost no overbite at all, and by lengthening the teeth slightly it would give her a much more normal smile.  Danielle was very hesitant about that idea. “What if I don’t like how long you make them.  Would you have to redo all the Irvine porcelain veneers and crown to make them shorter?”

Dr. Huefner assured Danielle that wouldn’t need to be done because he and Danielle would determine the length, shape and color of the teeth in the “trial smile” stage of her treatment.  “Huh?”, answered Danielle, “I don’t understand.”

Dr. Huefner explained that he would first make her temporary veneers and temporary crown based on a design he would create that he thought would make her smile look it’s very best.  She would be able to wear that “trail smile” for several days to evaluate it. “It’s kind of like taking a test drive,” Dr. Huefner told Danielle.  “You get to evaluate my smile design, the color, shape, position and length of all the teeth.  If there are any changes you want to make, we will do that for you either on the trial smile or by noting those changes to our ceramist who will be making your new Irvine porcelain veneers.”

Danielle started feeling much more comfortable about the entire treatment and process that Dr. Huefner was recommending.  She really liked the fact that many unknowns would be worked out BEFORE the actual Irvine porcelain veneers and porcelain crown were made!

A few weeks later Danielle returned to begin her treatment.  She started bleaching her lower teeth and Dr. Huefner reshaped some of her gums with the dental gum laser.  She was amazed on how easy both of those two procedures went.  Then Dr. Huefner removed the old porcelain crown that she hated and placed Danielle’s trial smile with the temporary crown and veneers.  She returned a few days later to discuss the smile design.  “I absolutely love the length of the teeth,” she told Dr. Huefner.  “There is only one thing I want changed…..I want the color to be a little whiter.”

Dr. Huefner and Danielle looked again at all the tooth color shades from the tooth shade guide.  Dr. Huefner advised Danielle not to choose BL1, the whitest tooth shade.  The reason is that Danielle’s upper lip goes up exposing all of her front teeth when she smiles.  This allows a lot of light to reach the teeth, and she may then feel that her teeth are way too bright.  Danielle understood his explanation, and chose a BL2 tooth shade, one of the most popular shade he uses according to Dr. Huefner.  “BL2 will look white enough for you without looking over the top, or too white,” he told Danielle.

BL2 shade porcelain veneers irvine

Danielle chose BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide for her new porcelain crown and porcelain veneers. This tooth color was the perfect choice for her. The new teeth were made slightly longer than her natural teeth were, which gave her a normal overbite and less gummy looking smile. The new porcelain crown and porcelain veneers also made her teeth straight and all the darkness that was seen on her original crown was eliminated. Danielle was the first to agree that her new smile was absolutely beautiful and life changing for her!

Two weeks later Danielle returned to try on the Irvine porcelain veneers and porcelain crown that Dr. Huefner’s ceramist, Dave Stohlman from LK Dental Studio, had made her.  Dr. Huefner said that she needed to preview them in three different lighting conditions: natural daylight, incandescent light and fluorescent light.  He wanted to make sure shed like the color of her teeth in all three lighting conditions.  She did that and approved the BL2 color.  Danielle loved her new Irvine porcelain veneers, especially the added length that Dr. Huefner had made them.  She gave Dr. Huefner her written permission accepting them for permanent placement.  Dr. Huefner then used his dental curing laser and bonded on Danielle’s new all ceramic crown and nine Irvine porcelain veneers.

Needless to say, Danielle was ecstatic with the results and her new smile.  Now she has a beautiful smile and all the confidence in the world when photos are taken of her.  Mission accomplished and one very happy lady!

Long Overdue for a Great Smile, Kirk from Irvine Now Looks Like a Million with New Porcelain Veneers

irvine porcelain veneers

After over twenty years Kirk was sick and tired of the yellow, unnatural look of his plastic veneers (lower photo). We replaced them with eight porcelain veneers utilizing a BL2 tooth shade and an masculine smile design (upper photo).

Kirk from Irvine was long overdue

An ambitious dynamo might rightly describe Kirk.  A very competitive, hard working businessman, Kirk always appears enthusiastic, energetic and positive in his attitude.  He quickly worked his way up the ladder and now is the head of his department.

As a youngster Kirk always had very discolored unattractive teeth and he was always very embarrassed and self conscious about what others were thinking about him.  When bonding first came out in the early 1980s Kirk had his family dentist cover over all the defects in his teeth with composite (plastic) veneers.  Looking much better, he was happy with the results for a while.  Then, several decades past and Kirk started comparing his smile with his peers.  “You know,” said Kirk, “I realized that my smile still needed a lot of help and I am really overdue for an upgrade.  It’s time for me to get serious about my appearance and replace my old veneers with new ones and give me the nice smile that I didn’t get the first time around.”

Listening careful to Kirk’s concerns, he pointed out that he thought his teeth looked “fake” and unnatural.  He wanted them to be whiter, not so thick and look like real teeth. And most importantly, he hated the way his teeth were discolored near his gums.

discolored composite veneers

Kirk was dissatisfied with the color, shape and thickness of his old plastic veneers. He also hated the way the plastic veneers were discolored around his gums.

After examining Kirk’s teeth and smile at his cosmetic dentistry consultation, we explained to him that although he most likely had a huge improvement with his old style plastic (composite) veneers, that today he could really benefit with porcelain veneers instead.  They could certainly be made whiter and more natural looking, and over time porcelain veneers wouldn’t darken and discolor over the years like his old plastic veneers did.   Another point was that he had only had six plastic veneers, and that if we were going to whiten his smile and truly give him more natural looking teeth that we would really need to make him eight porcelain veneers this time around.

Kirk agreed, he was really ready for a smile upgrade.  So, to give him the smile he really wanted we first whitened his lower teeth with Zoom in-office teeth bleaching, followed up by a supplement of one week of home tray bleaching.  Then we placed eight porcelain veneers for Kirk.  He chose a BL2 tooth color from the tooth shade guide and a masculine smile style from the tooth shape catalog.

A major improvement in Kirk's facial appearance was achieved with his new porcelain veneers. The color, shape, natural color and translucency were all a major upgrade compared to his old, discolored fake looking plastic veneers.

The results were a killer smile for Kirk from Irvine with eight porcelain veneers

What were the results?  A killer smile!  Kirk got the great looking smile that he wanted his entire life. “Wow,” he said after viewing his porcelain veneers for the first time on his teeth.  “I love them!  The color, shape and realness of them are a hundred times better than my first set.”

Porcelain Veneers Used to Make Short Teeth Longer and Give Grace from Irvine an Attractive, Younger Looking Smile

irvine porcelain veneers

By utilizing eight porcelain veneers we were able to give Grace what she wanted, longer, whiter teeth and a beautiful smile!

Grace, who lives and works in Irvine, CA, is a perfectionist about her dress and appearance.  In her early 40s she has started noticing that visual effects of aging were starting to creep up on her.  Never really happy about her smile she said that was tired of never liking the way her smile appeared, especially in photos.  We treated two of Grace’s co-workers in Irvine, who convinced Grace that she should come to our Orange County cosmetic dental practice to discuss options she might have.

At her appointment Grace was quick to share that she felt her teeth were way too short and yellow.  What she really wanted was longer, whiter teeth.  A number of years ago she porcelain veneers placed on two of her teeth, her upper lateral incisors, because those two teeth were extremely small.  That fixed the problem of having two short teeth, but didn’t substantially improve her smile as a whole.  Now she was ready to really do something to improve her smile.  What  could we do to help her?

short yellow teeth before porcelain veneers irvine

Grace didn't like her smile. She felt her teeth were too yellow and short. Average patients show 90% of their upper teeth when they smile. In Grace's case she only showed 50%, so lengthening them to give her a more normal and attractive smile was a definite consideration.

We looked at Grace’s teeth, and yes, they were yellow and slightly smaller and shorter than average.  When we evaluated her smile we could see that there was another problem, that her lip covered more than the usual amount of teeth.  Usually someone with a great smile shows 90% or all of the length of their upper teeth when smiling.  In Grace’s case, she only showed about 50%.  Thus we agreed with Grace, that lengthening her upper front teeth would allow her to show more teeth.  And if we made her teeth whiter, that would also help solved her unattractive smile problem.

Since Grace had healthy teeth with no large fillings or cavities, she was a great candidate for porcelain veneers.

The next decision to be made was how many of Grace’s teeth should get porcelain veneers?  Grace thought we should put porcelain veneers on all of her upper teeth.  But Grace only showed eight upper teeth when she smiled, thus she was happy to learn that we would only need to put porcelain veneers on eight teeth.

In designing Grace’s smile the next decision we had to make was how much longer to make her teeth?  Many things are taken into consideration when deciding the length of the upper front teeth.  For instance, when the mouth is completely relaxed and teeth not touching, in general we would like to see 1-2mm of upper front teeth showing.  She didn’t show any teeth when that was done.  Another point to consider is that when smiling we would like the edges of the upper front teeth to follow the curve of the lower lip.  Cosmetic dentists call this concept “following the smile line.”  Speech patterns, phonetics, comfort, normal teeth proportions and average tooth lengths are also considered.  After careful consideration we decided to make Grace’s porcelain veneers on her front teeth 1.5mm longer than they were.

orange county cosmetic dentist

By utilizing eight porcelain veneers, utilizing a BL1 tooth shade and lengthening her teeth 1.5mm Grace got a huge improvement in her smile, a beautiful bright white teeth that looked great when she smiled and in photos.

Another consideration was what color to make Grace’s teeth.  That decision is something that we insist that the patient makes.  We will generally discuss color with the patient at three appointments before they make their final decision as to the color.  We will make recommendations and discuss many important things about tooth color with our patients, but the ultimate decision will be theirs.  In Grace’s case we explained to her that since her upper lip covered more than the average amount of her upper front teeth that they would all be shadowed more than the average person.  This shadowing would make the teeth appear slightly darker for a given tooth color.  Thus, we suggested that Grace slightly overcompensate and utilize a tooth color that is slightly lighter than she wants.  Grace ultimately chose a BL1 color from the tooth shade guide.

After designing Grace’s final smile and three dental appointment Grace ended up with a fantastic smile, a huge improvement over what she originally had.  Her teeth were whiter, brighter and longer and she happily reported that she is very happy with results, especially when she sees herself in photos.

When a Front Tooth is Missing and It’s Time to Replace an Ugly Porcelain Bridge and Make a Younger Looking Smile

enhanced smile style and non-metal all-porcelain bridge orange county

Sara chose the best treatment to restore her older, ugly bridgework with obvious black lines around her gums and give her a more attractive and younger looking smile. We replaced her old porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge with a non-metal all-ceramic bridge and also placed seven porcelain veneers. She chose a BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide and "enhanced" smile style from the tooth shape catalog. The end result was she got a whiter, more youthful looking smile; a beautiful result to help make an incredible lady look her very best.

Sara knocked out one of her front teeth as a teenager.  In her twenties her family dentist made her a porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge.  Twenty-five years passed and the bridge served her well.  It was very functional and wasn’t obvious that she was missing one of her front teeth.

However, the appearance of her teeth and smile did change.  Sara’s gums receded around all of her teeth, but it was particularly noticeable around the two teeth that anchored her porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge.

Now approaching fifty, decades had its toll on Sara’s teeth, gums and porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge. When she smiled everyone could see black lines around her bridge at her gum line and the dark roots underneath were also very noticeable.  Sara is an attractive lady and her porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge was now greatly detracting from her smile and appearance!  She was now motivated to replace her old bridgework that had served her so well for almost three decades.

Sara wanted us to replace her old porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge.  But before making any specific recommendations it was important that Sara tell us her expectations.  Did she:

  • just want to replace the bridge, matching the color to her other teeth?
  • if so, did she want another porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge or one of the newer types (EMax or Porcelain pressed to Zirconia, both non-metal all-porcelain bridges) that wouldn’t ever have any black metal lines showing and would look more like natural teeth
  • or, did she want to have her smile greatly improved by covering up all the areas of recession and erosion around her gum line with porcelain veneers?
  • if she did both porcelain veneers and a non-metal all-porcelain bridge then instead of matching the older, yellow color she could have them all done with a whiter more attractive and natural-looking color and end up with a smile that could look 20-30 years younger than she currently has

After talking in great length about all of these options Sara that she definitely did not want another porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge and really liked the idea of a non-metal all-ceramic bridge and porcelain veneers on her other teeth.    “I’ve been waiting to fix my teeth again and get a nice smile for years now,” Sara said.  “If I’m going to do it again, I want it to look really good.  I want the best you can do for me!”

It was very obvious that Sara getting a “new smile” was very important to her.  We were able to work out a convenient payment schedule that allowed her to get the treatment she really wanted,  seven porcelain veneers and a non-metal all-ceramic bridge.  Sara chose a BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide and an “enhanced” smile style from the LVI tooth shape catalog.

And the results?  Look at the before and after photos and judge for yourself!

On no! I’m going to lose a front tooth.

porcelain veneers and porcelain bridge irvine

Tammy with her porcelain bridge to replace her missing front tooth and porcelain veneers on several of her other teeth. Beautiful teeth for a beautiful smile, for a beautiful wedding day!

Tammy from Irvine came to our office because her “front tooth was hurting”.  Unfortunately, Tammy had periodontal disease and her left lateral incisor had so much infection that the bone around the tooth was destroyed beyond the point that any treatment could repair.

“You mean I”m going to lose a front tooth?”, asked Tammy.  “How could that be?  I’m only in my 30s.  I thought people lost teeth from gum disease when they were old.  I can’t believe this is happening to me.  I’m getting married in two months!”

periodontal disease spaced teeth

Tammy had periodontal disease and one of her front teeth was infected so bad that it had to be extracted. Tammy's wedding was in two months and she wanted a beautiful smile.

Fortunately for Tammy there was a solution.  Her gum disease could be treated so that she wouldn’t lose any more teeth and a permanent porcelain bridge made to replace the tooth that needed to be removed.

After her tooth was extracted, a temporary bridge placed and her periodontal disease was treated Dr. Huefner said it was time for her to make some decisions.  “Tammy, before I go ahead and make your permanent bridge, I need to know if you just want me to make the bridge to match your other teeth, or do you want to make any other changes in your teeth and smile?, asked Dr. Huefner.

Tammy was quick to reply.  She said that she didn’t like the color of her teeth.  “Could they be whiter?”, she asked.  Also, she didn’t like the spaces around her teeth and the fact that they slanted to one side.  She wanted to know what could Dr. Huefner do to give her a really great smile for her wedding?

porcelain bridge irvine

Compare the before and after photos. Can you tell which tooth was infected and had to be removed? Swollen, red gums and spaced teeth are an indication of periodontal disease.

Dr. Huefner explained to Tammy that he could still do the porcelain bridge to replace her missing tooth, but he could also place porcelain veneers on several of her upper front teeth.  That would enable him to control the color, shape and length of her teeth and give her an incredible smile.

“Dr. Huefner, I know that I want to have a beautiful smile for my bridal photos.  Let’s go ahead with your recommendations and do the porcelain veneers too,”  Tammy said.

Three weeks later Tammy’s new smile with porcelain veneers and a porcelain bridge to replace her missing tooth was completed.  She chose an “enhanced” smile design from the tooth shape library and a tooth shade BL1 from the tooth shade guide.  Tammy, the bride-to-be from Irvine, got the beautiful smile she wanted.  And as you might imagine, a few months later she got married and looked fantastic in her bridal photos!  Nobody had any idea that she was missing one of her front teeth.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Tammy’s porcelain veneer and porcelain bridge treatment.

Transforming Kristen’s Old Veneers into Dazzling Smile with New Porcelain Veneers Irvine

Not happy with her four old porcelain veneers
porcelain veneers irvine

Kristen replaced four old porcelain veneers with ten new ones. She chose a BL1 tooth shade, slightly lighter than she wanted because her lips naturally shadowed her teeth, which made them appear slightly darker.

Ten years ago Kristen from Irvine had some issues with her front teeth.  They were spaced, discolored and had large fillings.  So, since she wanted a more attractive smile her family dentist placed four porcelain veneers on her front four teeth.  “It was a huge improvement,” she said, “I’m glad I did it but now my profession is in sales and I think it’s really important that that I have a great smile.”
At her cosmetic dentistry consultation here in Orange County, Kristen described what kind of smile she wanted:

  • straight teeth
  • white teeth
  • even and well proportioned teeth
  • side-back teeth that didn’t lean inwards, so she would have a broader looking smile
Removing old veneers?
four old porcelain veneers irvine

Ten years ago Kristen had four porcelain veneers placed to match her other teeth. She decided she wanted a whiter, brighter and broader smile and came to Dr. Huefner to replace the old porcelain veneers.

“Is it hard to get my old veneers off,” she asked Dr. Huefner?  She was pleased to learn the answer, that replacing Kristen’s old porcelain veneers and placing new porcelain veneers is a pretty straight forward dental procedure.  Also, the old porcelain veneers can be removed safely and easily, usually taking only about five minutes per tooth.

Choosing the best color for her new veneers

Dr. Huefner explained to Kristen that to get what she wanted, and since she shows twelve upper teeth when she smiles, that ten porcelain veneers would be the best way for her to go.  Since she wanted “whiter teeth”, this would enable most of the teeth she showed when she smile to be the same “white color”.  Also, by placing porcelain veneers on Kristen’s back-side teeth, this would allow Dr. Huefner to widen the teeth for the broader smile that she wanted.

“Color is something we need to seriously discuss,” Dr. Huefner told Kristen.  He explained that even though she shows 10-12 teeth when she smiles, her teeth are all set back and inwards relative to her lips.  This is an important concept to grasp before choosing the color of her new porcelain veneers.  Since her lips will always shadow her teeth a bit more than normal, it tends to make them appear a little darker than the color that she probably wants.  Thus Dr. Huefner suggested that she compensate by choosing a tooth color that is one half to one shade lighter than the color she thinks she wants.

Kristen accepted Dr. Huefner’s recommendations and had him place ten porcelain veneers.  She chose a BL1 shade from the tooth shade guide, and bleached her lower teeth.  Regarding the “smile style” from the tooth shape library, Kristen chose the “enhanced” design.  Kristen’s smile makeover with new porcelain veneers was completed in four dental visits over a three week period.

After her smile makeover was completed we asked Kristen if anyone had said anything about her new smile?  “Yes, I’ve had several, but the best one was from my husband who said that now I have a dazzling smile!”

We’re pleased that this Irvine lady is so satisfied with her “dazzling new smile”created with porcelain veneers.

Irvine Man’s Yellow Worn Teeth Transformed with Porcelain Veneers

yellow worn teeth to be corrected with porcelain veneers irvine

Charles didn't like his yellow and worn down teeth.

Charles, a businessman from Irvine, had very yellow and worn down teeth.  In the public’s eye, in front of clients all the time, he became self conscious about the way his teeth appeared.  He came to Dr. Huefner’s Orange County cosmetic dental practice for a second opinion.  A very straight shooter, Charles told Dr. Huefner “I want all my teeth whiter.  I don’t like the yellow color  and want the worn down appearance corrected.”

porcelain veneers irvine to correct yellow teeth

Charles had ten porcelain veneers placed on his upper teeth and teeth whitening on his lower teeth.

Dr. Huefner recommended teeth whitening for his lower teeth and porcelain veneers for his upper front teeth. Charles chose a “softened” smile style from the LVI smile catalog and a shade BL3 from the tooth shade guide. His treatment was completed in less than a months time.

Lori’s Ugly Front Crown and Dark Teeth Needed Cosmetic Dentistry

Irvine Cosmetic Dentist for Lori
irvine cosmetic dentistry before porcelain veneers

Lori hated the cap on her front tooth. Also, she wanted her teeth whiter and straighter.

Lori, a business executive from Irvine needed some dental help.  As a young lady she fell and broke her front tooth in half, but fortunately she was able to save it and had a cap (porcelain crown) made by her family dentist to restore her smile.  She had also had braces as a child, but like so many others, didn’t wear her retainer and her teeth and bite shifted over the years.  Lori felt very strongly that one’s appearance is an important factor in achieving success, and with regards to her teeth and smile felt that she wasn’t doing as much as she should have to look her very best.  She said that she needed a good dentist, but this time rather than a general dentist, like the one who placed the first porcelain crown on her front tooth, she wanted a dentist who was really experienced with cosmetic dentistry.  After consulting with three other dentists Lori sought Dr. Huefner’s recommendation as to the best way to revitalize her smile, to get the professional and attractive smile that she had always wanted.

The most important appointment is the cosmetic dentistry consultation

Lori’s first question to Dr. Huefner was “What would you do to correct my teeth and smile?  I’ve gone to three other dentists in Irvine and elsewhere in Orange County, and each one wants to do something different.”  Dr. Huefner explained to Lori that if she consulted with ten cosmetic dentists she would still probably get ten different treatment plans and end results.  “Cosmetic dentistry is an art, and although much of the cosmetic dentist’s ability comes from training and experience, that one of most important factor is the actual artistic ability of the cosmetic dentist.  However today,” Dr. Huefner continued to explain to Lori, “the most important thing I can do is carefully listen to you, to what you like about your teeth, what you don’t like, what you want changed and the kind of smile you want in the end.  When I truly know what you want and expect, then I can tell you what I think is the best approach to giving you that smile.”

Lori said that most of all she hated her front cap (her old porcelain crown).  That it didn’t match the tooth next to it and that the gums around it were darker too.  Also, that after he orthodontics relapsed, that her teeth shifted to her right.  She hated the fact that they were still crooked and all her life she wanted a bright, white smile with straight and normally shaped teeth.  She had one cap, it was a bad experience because she didn’t like the way it looked, and she didn’t want any more “of those.”  Could porcelain veneers solve her problems?

Lori's smile enhancement with porcelain veneers and a all-porcelain crown

Dr. Huefner recommended replacing her existing porcelain-fused-to-metal cap with an all-ceramic Empress porcelain crown.  Since she wanted a whiter smile, she should bleach her lower teeth first, that way she could comfortably choose a whiter color for her upper teeth.  And for upper teeth, those teeth would have porcelain veneers.  The end result of having porcelain veneers and a new all-ceramic porcelain crown would be straight, white teeth, balanced and all of uniform proportion.  Dr. Huefner anticipated a treatment time, beginning to end, of three weeks.  In designing her smile he would strive to give her a more youthful, more feminine smile like the LVI “enhanced” smile style.  Probably a shade BL2 or even BL1 if she wanted even whiter teeth.

Before and after porcelain veneers and new porcelain crown

Lori went home and discussed the cosmetic dentistry treatment plan with her husband.  She did the bleach first, as Dr. Huefner had recommended. but said that even though her lower teeth were whiter and weren’t that noticeable, that she knew she would never be satisfied until they all matched.  Thus Lori returned several months later to have lower porcelain veneers.
