Many people make the decision to get porcelain veneers annually. These slim porcelain shells fit over your existing teeth. And while we imagine that porcelain veneers are mainly for celebrities like Beyonce, J-Law, and Tom Cruise, porcelain veneers don’t always have a movie star price tag attached to them.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Just like any cosmetic procedure, there are risks and benefits involved. By working with our Orange County cosmetic dentistry team, you can discover all the techniques and tools available to enhance your smile.

Some common cosmetic dentistry procedures are:

1)         Dental Bonding – Dental Bonding is a treatment option for any chipped, broken, stained or cracked teeth. It is also effective for balancing out any excess spaces between teeth.

2)         Teeth Whitening – The options for teeth whitening include in-office procedure or at-home treatments. If you teeth are stained or discolored for any reason from consuming foods, smoking, taking specific medicines, or beverages such as coffee or tea, then learning more about teeth whitening procedures is a good idea.

3)         Porcelain Veneers – These delicate, custom shells cover the front sides of your teeth to improve their color, tone, and shape. Porcelain veneers last much longer than bonding and are less expensive than dental crowns.

Planning Your Smile Makeover

If you are embarrassed to show your teeth when you smile, it may be time to consider a smile makeover. Today’s cosmetic dentistry techniques, materials, and technology can address virtually any flaw that is compromising the look of your smile – including cracked teeth, stained teeth, uneven teeth, broken teeth, and gaps between teeth.

Our experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner has been helping patients throughout the Laguna Niguel area transform their smiles for decades. When planning your smile makeover, we will consider several different factors, including:

  • The specific cosmetic dental problems you want to correct
  • Your own goals for your smile
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your budget

There are usually many different ways to fix a certain smile flaw, which gives you flexibility when choosing the treatments and procedures you want to include with your smile. In some cases, only a single treatment (such as porcelain veneers) may be necessary for a full smile makeover. Other patients may need a combination of treatments – such as teeth whitening, dental crowns, and porcelain veneers – in order to achieve the results they are looking for.

Dr. Huefner will examine your teeth and make a personalized recommendation based on the factors discussed above. The most effective options will be presented to you through our advanced patient education software. If porcelain veneers will be part of your smile makeover, Dr. Huefner can fit you with a “trial smile” of temporary restorations so you can test out your new smile design before we make it permanent.

If you are ready to discuss your smile makeover options in more depth with an experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call (949) 495-6322 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, and surrounding areas of Orange County, California.

Lumineers vs. Regular Porcelain Veneers: What’s the Difference?

If you are considering porcelain veneers to enhance your smile, you may be curious about Lumineers and other name-brand variations that are advertised as an alternative to traditional veneers. The main difference between regular porcelain veneers and brands like Lumineers (along with Vivaneers, Nano, Emax, and Durathin) is their relative thickness. These ultlra-thin varieties usually require no preparation of the teeth before they are applied, which is appealing for many patients. Additionally, they tend to require less reshaping than traditional veneers.

However, ultra-thin Lumineers may not provide the best aesthetic results for some patients. If they are placed on teeth that are already sufficiently thick, you may be left with a smile that looks and feels overly “bulky.” Most people require some preparation of the tooth to ensure the veneer fits and looks as natural as possible.

Another factor to consider with ultra-thin veneers is their transparency. The thickness of our Empress porcelain veneers at Huefner Sensational Smiles easily conceals any stains and discoloration on the supporting tooth. In contrast, Lumineers are so thin that the darker color of a tooth may still show through to a degree, making your smile less bright than it could have been. However, if significant discoloration isn’t a concern in your case, then Lumineers may be a good option to consider.

Combining Teeth Whitening with Porcelain Veneers

Teeth whitening and porcelain veneers are two of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures we perform. Alone, each procedure can dramatically transform the appearance of your smile. However, for certain candidates, they are most effective when used together.

Porcelain veneers are generally used on the teeth that show when you smile (called your “smile line”). Different people will show a different number of teeth when they smile; for example, some only show six or eight, while others with wider smiles – such as Julia Roberts – show twelve.

Choosing the right number of porcelain veneers is important to ensure a uniform smile line; if you place too few veneers, there may be a significant contrast between the color of your natural teeth and the color of your veneers, unless you deliberately tint your veneers a duller shade.

Since most people want the brightest smile possible, using teeth whitening first – before veneers are placed – is often an excellent option. Teeth whitening can improve the shade of your natural teeth, allowing you to tint your veneers a brighter shade of white while ensuring your smile line is seamless.

However, it’s important to note that some teeth contain deep intrinsic stains that cannot be removed by teeth whitening. If this is the case, you may need to place more porcelain veneers to mask these stains. Our experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner will discuss all of your options with you in detail after carefully examining the condition of your teeth.

Dark Discolored Teeth Fixed with Porcelain Veneers

multicolored teeth in need of smile makeover

Scott didn’t like his multicolored teeth and felt he would look more professional in his business if his crooked, discolored teeth were straight and all the same color. Of the eight teeth that showed when Scott smiled, there were five different colors. Certainly the crown on his front tooth didn’t match any of his teeth, and the other front tooth that had a root canal discolored to a very unattractive brown color. Yes, Scott was the perfect candidate for cosmetic dentistry.

Discolored Teeth a problem for Scott

Scott is a Irvine businessman who is very successful.  He has a number of employees and most of the time is the main person dealing with his customers.  He came to Dr. Huefner’s cosmetic dental practice with one huge complaint.  “I hate my discolored teeth!”, he told Dr. Huefner.  Dr. Huefner told Scott that he understood that really bothered him, but asked him if he would explain a bit more why it bothers him so much?

After a short moment of thinking, Scott started to tell his story.  When he was in high school he used to play a lot of basketball.  One day the game got a little rough and Scott found himself flat on the floor, breaking off a good part of the edge of one of his front teeth.  He went to his family dentist who ended up doing root canal treatments on both front teeth to stop the pain.  Then the dentist fixed the broken tooth by placing a porcelain fused to metal crown on it.

Scott was happy just to be out of pain and have a new tooth again, but his happiness ended later on.  The dentist had made the crown too white, not really matching any of his other teeth, and the adjacent tooth that also had a root canal but wasn’t capped started turning a very dark color.  Fast forward twenty years later, Scott became increasingly self conscious of his discolored teeth and the fact that they were crooked.  “I’m an important leader of a successful business and am constantly dealing face to face with customers every day.  I know it’s time for me to get a professional looking smile where all my teeth are straight, the same color so I won’t be embarrassed about them any more,” Scott stated emphatically.

porcelain veneers and one all porcelain crown solve multicolored tooth problem

Photo below: Scott’s crooked multicolored teeth were a source of embarrassement to him. As a successful businessman Scott felt it was time to get straight, white teeth to enhance his image. Photo above: Dr. Huefner solved the problem of Scott having five different colors and crooked teeth by placing one new all porcelain crown and seven porcelain veneers.

Upon examining Scott’s teeth Dr. Huefner found them to be very healthy, just that like Scott said, his teeth were crooked and discolored.  Of his eight upper front teeth that he showed when he smiled, there were at least five very different colors.  Fortunately for Scott, treating his problem would be very straight forward.  Dr. Huefner recommended replacing the porcelain fused to metal crown that didn’t match any of his other teeth with an all porcelain crown that matched his other teeth and looked like a real tooth.  Also, he advised placing porcelain veneers on the seven other discolored front teeth.  By doing this when Scott smiled his teeth would all be straight, even and he would no longer have discolored teeth!

Scott thought about it for a few moments and then asked what color Dr. Huefner would change his discolored teeth to?  Dr. Huefner answered, “Whatever color you would like Scott!  We’ll recommend a few different tooth colors that we think would look good for you, but the ultimate choice on the color is yours!”

BL2 tooth shade

Scott’s smile makeover was completed in just 2 1/2 weeks. Scott chose BL2 for the tooth color for his porcelain veneers and one all porcelain crown. The end result enhanced Scott’s professional image and also gave him a younger looking and more attractive smile.

“I’d really like them to be a lot whiter as long as they don’t look fake,” Scott exclaimed.  Dr. Huefner and Scott looked at numerous tooth colors from the tooth shade guide, and Scott chose BL2 as his favorite.  “I didn’t think you would choose a color that white,” Dr. Huefner told Scott.  “Actually that color is one of our most popular colors with patients getting the same kind of treatment that you are.  I think that will work for you, certainly giving you a more professional and a little more youthful smile than colors that aren’t as white.”

Porcelain Veneer treatment completed in two and a half weeks

Scott accepted the treatment plan that Dr. Huefner recommended and started his smile makeover with porcelain veneers and one porcelain crown.  His treatment went smoothly and was completed just 2 1/2 weeks later.  Scott was elated with the end results.  Finally, after all these years, a great looking smile and no more discolored teeth!

Worn old looking smile rejuvenated with porcelain veneers by DrHuefner

younger looking smile with porcelain veneers

Photo below: Roselyn’s teeth were very worn. She is only forty, but her teeth looked twice that age. Also, she wanted whiter teeth and for her teeth to be straight, with no gaps inbetween them.
Photo above: Dr. Huefner made ten porcelain veneers for Roselyn. He made her veneers longer than her worn teeth were, about the length they were when she was a teenager. Roselyn chose the color she wanted for her new teeth, a BL1 tooth shade, which is one of the whitest natural looking shades available for porcelain veneers and crowns. Also, Dr. Huefner made her teeth straight with the porcelain veneers. She was very happy to loose the crooked, old looking smile and loved the more attractive and youthful looking smile that Dr. Huefner made for her.

Roselyn, a very active and young-at-heart lady who just turned forty was feeling that her appearance was getting away from her.  “When I smile my teeth are so short and worn that I feel it makes me look really old,” she told Dr. Huefner.  Upon looking at Roselyn’s teeth it was quite obvious what she was referring to.  Her teeth were quite worn, something we might normally expect from someone twice her age.

“I see exactly what you are telling me,” Dr. Huefner told her.  “Yes, your teeth are extremely worn.  You know, if you keep this up you are going to wear your teeth down to little stubs.”  Dr. Huefner went on to ask Roselyn if there were any other things that concerned her?

“Well, the color of my teeth are really dark and discolored.  I’ve always wanted clean, white teeth.  Is that something that you can fix for me?” She asked Dr. Huefner.

Dr. Huefner answered Roselyn that before he started recommending any treatment he needed to know if there was anything else with her teeth that she wanted him to address?  Roselyn said, “One more thing.  My teeth are crooked and spaced.  I feel like maybe the best way for me to go is just pull ’em all out and give me dentures.”

Roselyn’s last statement really shocked Dr. Huefner!  “No Roselyn, we certainly don’t have to do that.  We can fix the three things that concern you with porcelain veneers, a very common cosmetic dental treatment that we do today.  It will make your teeth longer, and I can make them the same length they were for you when you were a teenager.  Also, we can make your veneers white and in fact, you can choose the color we make your teeth.  And lastly, we can make your teeth straight and even, as if your had braces. But we can do all this in just under a month’s time,” Dr. Huefner told Roselyn.

She was amazed.  She couldn’t believe that she could go from an old looking smile to a beautiful, younger looking smile with porcelain veneers and that her entire treatment could be done so quickly.  After discussing some other options and Dr. Huefner answering some more questions about porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry, Roselyn agreed to Dr. Huefner’s treatment recommendations.  And as Dr. Huefner had promised, Roselyn had her new, younger looking smile with porcelain veneers in less than a month’s time.

After her treatment was completed Dr. Huefner asked Roselyn how she felt about her new smile?  “I just love my new teeth, the veneers make me look so much younger than I looked before,” she told Dr. Huefner.

Porcelain Veneers Overhaul Mary’s Smile – AMAZING RESULTS

Laguna Niguel porcelain veneers

Mary’s smile makeover with eight new porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner. She chose a BL2 tooth shade and asked Dr. Huefner to make her new veneers a little longer than her natural teeth were. Not only was her smile stunning, but it looked so real and natural that it looked like “real teeth”, not cosmetic dentistry.

Mary had two porcelain veneers placed on her lateral incisors several years ago.  Mary said, “They are thick and gray.  They don’t look like real teeth.  What I want is my smile to show brighter, whiter teeth, and I want them to be real looking and straight.  Can you do this for me with porcelain veneers?”

Mary’s discolored, crooked, short teeth before Dr. Huefner made her eight new porcelain veneers.

Having seen several other cosmetic dentists before coming to see us, and doing some research, it was pleasing to treat Mary because she knew exactly what kind of cosmetic dental treatment she wanted to have done, porcelain veneers.  She knew to make all the teeth straight and the same color (white and bright) that at least eight upper teeth would need to get porcelain veneers because she showed eight teeth when she smiled.  So, since we knew the treatment and how many teeth needed to get porcelain veneers the next decisions to make was exactly what color did Mary want her new porcelain veneers to be, and how long to make them.  She looked carefully at the color of her teeth, which were pretty discolored, and chose the BL2 tooth shade from the tooth shade guide for her new veneers.  With regard to the length of her teeth, Mary said she wanted a “bigger smile” and thought that her teeth were a little to small.  Thus we chose to make her new porcelain veneers a little longer in length.

Orange County porcelain veneers for Mary

Above: Mary’s new smile with eight porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner. Below: Mary’s teeth before cosmetic dental treatment. Note how discolored and crooked her teeth were. Also that her lateral incisors, which had previous porcelain veneers by her old dentist, didn’t match and were very thick and natural looking. The end result is that Mary was very pleased, getting the truly beautiful smile that she had always wanted.

Mary’s porcelain veneer treatment went smoothly and she got her new smile makeover completed within three weeks.

Beautiful Smile and Perfect Teeth with Orange County Porcelain Veneers

Former Mrs. U.S.-Globe beauty pageant winner Jill Frick gets smile makeover by Dr. Huefner with Orange County porcelain veneers

The other day I had a conversation with former Orange County resident and Mrs. U.S. Globe beauty pageant winner, Jill Frick.  I had made Orange County porcelain veneers for her over ten years ago.  I was so pleased to see how beautiful her smile still was, and how beautiful the Orange County porcelain veneers I made her still were and how well they were still holding up.  Since then I’ve done smile makeovers with Orange County porcelain veneers for over a dozen beauty pageant winners, along with several models and actresses.  But Jill’s story is typical of someone who was beautiful to begin with, but after having Orange County porcelain veneers becomes even more beautiful and attractive.

Jill had composite bonding that over the years had been chipping away and discoloring. After discussing her goals with Dr. Huefner Jill decided it was time to upgrade her smile with a more permanent and better looking treatment, Orange County porcelain veneers.

It started out very simply, Jill had had plastic composite bonding on her front teeth that was done to overcome some of the cosmetic issues with older fillings and darkened teeth.  But plastic bonding, also called composite bonding, has certain limitations compared with the Orange County porcelain veneers that we use today.  Her plastic bonding wasn’t as strong and started chipping and discoloring.  It was at the point that she knew it was time for her to had her smile makeover redone, but this time with modern Orange County porcelain veneers instead of the composite bonding.

Before we started Jill made it very clear to me that this time she wanted her teeth to look much better than the composite veneers she already had.  She wanted her new teeth to be whiter, natural looking, and very elegant looking.  You see Jill had been a national spokesperson for the Women In Need Foundation’s abuse recovery program.  She was often on stage, speaking to groups about the program she was so dedicated to.  It was very obvious that Jill wanted me to give her my very best.  Without hesitation, I assured her that I would do just that!

This is the “trial smile” that Jill wore on her teeth after Dr. Huefner removed her old composite bonding. Dr. Huefner used these temporary composite veneers to determine Jill’s final smile design, specifically the shape, length, proportion and color of the final Orange County porcelain veneers that master ceramist Dave Stohlman would be making for her.

So, the first thing I did for Jill was bleach (whiten) her lower teeth and remove her old composite plastic bonding and place temporary veneers.  We call this phase of treatment “the trial smile”.  In one visit I custom made Jill ten plastic veneers of the color, length and shape of the Orange County porcelain veneers that I envisioned for her.  This was a very important step, a “test drive” so to speak, because if Jill liked the shape, length and color of her trial smile I would then duplicate that design in her final Orange County porcelain veneers.  The trial smile would serve as a template for them.  However, if Jill didn’t like the design, or wanted one or more elements changed, we would do that, or make note of the changes, before making the Orange County porcelain veneers.  I was very pleased that after wearing her trial smile Jill returned to my office a few days later loving the smile design I had done for her and gave me full written approval to move forward with the actual Orange County porcelain veneers following that design.  We did add a couple minor elements in the final design that wasn’t possible in the trial smile plastic temporary veneers.  We added natural incisal translucency to the tips or edges of her Orange County porcelain veneers, whitened the color slightly, and also added some very slight surface texture that imparts a real natualness to the Orange County porcelain veneers, especially when light is seen reflecting off of the surface.

I sent all of the very specific design information to Dave Stohlman, the master ceramist I use for most of my Orange County porcelain veneers.  It took Dave a couple weeks to complete Jills final Orange County porcelain veneers, but there was no rush.  Jill was very comfortable wearing the beautiful trial smile temporary veners, as after all, they looked almost perfect themselves.

Jill’s final smile design with Orange County porcelain veneers done by Dr. Huefner and master ceramist Dave Stohlman. Jill was extremely pleased with the final results, especially the color and shape of her new porcelain veneers. Many people would argue that Jill’s smile makeover gave her a perfect smile. You be the judge.

When we finally got the Orange County porcelain veneers back from Dave Stohlman, we had Jill return so that we could remove the trial smile temporary veneers, and try in the Orange County porcelain veneers for her approval.  Jill absolutely loved them!  We then bonded on the Orange County porcelain veneers utilizing our dental laser and a translucent bonding cement that gave her final Orange County porcelain veneers a very natural and life like look to them.

As a dentist who absolutely loves doing cosmetic dental treatment and all of the very specific minutia necessary to get a superlative result like with did for Jill with her Orange County porcelain veneers I could go on and on, describing countless aspects of all the details done for Jill.  And (laughing to myself), if you’ve gotten this far reading this post, you certainly know that I could do just that.  However, I will let the final photos of Jill’s Orange County porcelain veneers speak for our treatment more than any words could.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Brooks Gets New Teeth

Vicki Gunvalson and Brooks Ayers of The Real Housewives of Orange County after Brooks' smile makeover with porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner

In early November The Real Housewives of Orange County star, Vicki Gunvalson, called me on the telephone regarding her boyfriend, Brooks Ayers. If you follow the reality show, you know that Vicki is going through divorce and that Brooks is the new man in her life. Brooks, who is sharing his time between Mississippi and Orange County, didn’t, in his own opinion have a great smile. As a matter of fact, in Vicki’s words, “Brooks’ smile definitely needed some HELP”! Vicki went on to say, “Brooks is a great man. He’s smart, hard working, successful, handsome, and a lot of fun to be with. His teeth and smile just didn’t fit with the Orange County image. Brooks and I think that he really needs an Orange County smile!” Vicki informed me that she chose me to do a smile makeover for Brooks in order to transform his teeth into the great looking, straight, white, “Orange County” teeth. Vicki also told me that she would like to have a film crew in our dental office during parts of Brooks’ smile makeover to document the procedure which would air on The Real Housewives of Orange County show in the early summer. “Could you do that?” she asked me. My answer was, “Yes… absolutely!” I knew we would have to work fast because his cosmetic dental treatment would have to be completed within a month in order to be filmed for Season 7 of The Real Orange County Housewives which was to begin airing February 7th, 2012.

Brooks had very crooked teeth and his upper right lateral incisor was in cross bite. His teeth were worn short and his upper lip was slightly longer than normal, masking much of his teeth when he smiled. Vicki wanted Brooks to have an "Orange County Smile", with straight, white, perfectly aligned teeth. We had less than a month to accomplish this, as we had to complete his new smile before the last week's filming of "Real Housewives of Orange County."

Vicki brought in Brooks for his first appointment with us, accompanied by The Real Housewives of Orange County film crew. We interviewed Brooks to find out what he didn’t like about his smile and what he wanted to accomplish. He was quick to point out that he was embarrassed about his smile, that his teeth were extremely crooked and that he was not able to get braces as a child like his children have been fortunate to receive. Vicki contributed to the conversation by explaining that since Brooks is now living in Orange County and that they are a couple portrayed on a reality show, it is important that he look “the Orange County” part. That is when the fun began. Seeing the drama of Brooks and Vicki banter back and forth about his teeth, his lips, his jaws and all his little “flaws” that I needed to correct, I realized our biggest challenges were neither Vicki nor Brooks, but the short time span we had to complete Brooks’ treatment and the correction of the cross bite he had on his upper right, lateral incisor. I explained to them both that ideally he should have braces to move the tooth in cross bite into a normal position, but that would take several months to accomplish. The other alternative would be to remove the tooth in cross bite and make a bridge. Although we prefer not to remove a healthy tooth, doing that would allow me to have the best control over giving him the “Orange County smile” that he wanted as well as staying within his time restraints. They both agreed that if removing one tooth would enable me to create beautiful, straight, white teeth for him within a month’s time that they would do that. So off Brooks went to the oral surgeon and the tooth was removed.

At the "trial smile" (temporary veneer phase), Brooks and Vicki got to preview the smile design Dr. Huefner created for him. Specifically, the "trial smile" is used to determine if the patient likes the length, shape, contour and color of the "new teeth." If he (or Vicki?) didn't approve, then Dr. Huefner would change the design until it met their approval. From the "trial smile" design, Dr. Huefner's ceramist, Dave Stohlman from LK Dental Studio, would make Brooks' final porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

A couple days after Brooks had the tooth extracted he returned to our office without Vicki. We prepared his teeth for four porcelain veneers and two porcelain bridges. Then we created Brooks’ “trial smile” which are temporary veneers and bridges that we used as our template for his final porcelain veneers and bridges. This was a very important step, as the “trial smile” is used to verify that we are designing his new teeth to his liking in regards to the size, shape, length, color and alignment of his new teeth. It’s kind of like a “test drive” of the new smile. If you didn’t like the “test drive” on a car, of course you wouldn’t buy it! Good cosmetic dentists use the “trial smile” as a “test drive” of sorts, making sure that the cosmetic dentist and patient are all on the same page before the final cosmetic dentistry is made duplicating the basic design of the “approved” trial smile.

After wearing the “trial smile” for a few days, Brooks was asked to return with Vicki to give his approval. Of course, in this situation, I needed to get approval from both of them. I gathered that Vicki would want to be on board with the design, too. Without Vicki’s approval, I am very sure that both Brooks and I would get our own “reality check” from her. If there was something Brooks and/or Vicki wanted to change, I would make (or note) those changes and finalize the design before sending it to our ceramist, Dave Stohlman, at L.K. Dental lab to adjust.

Two days later, we saw Brooks, Vicki, and The Real Housewives of Orange County camera crew again in our office to film for the show. We proceeded to take photos of Brooks’ “trial smile.” After which, the three of us looked at the photos and discussed our goals. Were the teeth long enough? Straight enough? Was the shape a masculine smile design that worked well with his lips and face? Did the edges of his teeth nicely follow the contour of his lower lip when he smiled? Once we were in agreement regarding Brooks’ smile design, the actual color needed to be selected. They definitely wanted his “new teeth” to be whiter than the BL4 tooth color of the “trial smile.” I pointed out that since Brooks has a longer upper lip that naturally shadows his teeth, we should over compensate by making his teeth at least one or two shades lighter than they originally requested. Using a custom shade guide by LK Dental Studio made of actual EMax porcelain, Vicki and Brooks chose the whitest natural looking tooth color, BL1.

EMax custom shade guide LK Dental Studio

In choosing the color for Brook's "new teeth," we utilized a custom shade guide of EMax porcelain made by our ceramist, Dave Stohlman at LK Dental Studio. Right, top to bottom: A1,B1. Left, top to bottom: BL4, BL3, BL2 and BL1. Brooks and Vicki chose BL1 for his new porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

Now that the details of the smile design were agreed upon, there wasn’t any guesswork for our ceramist, Dave Stohlman, at LK Dental Studio to follow. Once I gave Dave the specific details that Vicki, Brooks and I required, he added in the artistic details – that master ceramists like him do – to make the cosmetic dentistry look exceptionally beautiful and extremely lifelike. Brooks was instructed to wear his “trial smile” (temporary veneers and bridges) for another week while Dave was completing his porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

Brooks had an amazing transformation with his smile makeover with porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges. We not only made his new teeth considerably whiter and slightly longer, but they were now straight, without any cross bite. The shape of the teeth created a very masculine smile and improved his self confidence.

The following week, Brooks returned without Vicki. We gently removed his temporary veneers and tried on his porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges for his approval. He loved the BL1 tooth shade and the masterfully created porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges that Dave made for him. We then bonded Brooks’ cosmetic dentistry into place with a porcelain bonding laser and he left very happy with his new smile. The real test would be the following day….”the reveal”…..when Vicki would see Brooks for the first time with his “Orange County Smile.”

The before and after photos of Brooks' teeth show an amazing transformation. One might think that orthodontic braces would have been the only way that crooked teeth could be made straight. However, it was clear that a patient with as many dental problems as Brooks, that cosmetic dentistry is oftentimes the treatment of choice. Can you see which tooth had been removed and replaced with a porcelain bridge?

The next day Brooks returned for his normally scheduled post-insertion adjustment accompanied by The Real Housewives of Orange County camera crew. We took our final photos of Brooks’ completed smile makeover while anxiously awaiting Vicki’s arrival. Once Vicki arrived, we brought her back to our studio/consultation room and for the first time she saw Brooks with his new smile. I’m not going to spill the beans about the drama of “the reveal” visit – you’ll just have to tune in and watch Season 7 of The Real Housewives of Orange County. I will spill the beans about one thing, Brooks and Vickie were both so delighted with the results that they both returned together the following week and we did a “couple’s photo shoot” for them (see photo collage at top of the blog).

Brooks Ayers, Vicki Gunvalson's boyfriend and one of the "stars" on the Real Housewives of Orange County reality show needed an "Orange County Smile." We transformed his "crooked, discolored, Mississippi" smile into a stunning "Orange County Smile." No longer is Brooks self-conscious about his teeth and smile.

This professional quality portrait photo shoot that my assistant, Kathy, and I did for Brooks and Vicki is a gift we actually have been doing for most of our smile makeover patients over the last eight years. These photo portraits serve to celebrate our patients’ “new smiles” and new beginnings that their beautiful teeth and improved appearances have created.

In a cosmetic dental practice like ours, we deal with complex smile makeovers like we did for Brooks all the time. But for us, having a film crew in our office while doing such intense dentistry in an extraordinarily short period of time was a new and challenging experience. As you might imagine, there was definitely some stress involved, but we love taking on new challenges and we certainly enjoyed our experience with The Real Housewives of Orange County reality show. In the end, Vicki was pleased with the results and we were pleased to have met her high level of expectation. I’m also very sure that if she wasn’t pleased, she certainly would have communicated that with me.
