Missing Lateral Incisors and Illusions Created with Veneers Laguna Niguel

porcelain veneers replacing congenitally missing teeth

Johnny’s new smile with porcelain veneers to correct for his congenitally missing lateral incisors. A special technique using illusions in the shape of the porcelain veneers enabled Johnny to have a completed smile that obscured his missing teeth.

Johnny, a young man from Laguna Niguel was congenitally missing lateral incisors, the two teeth in a normal mouth that are next to the front teeth. He had had porcelain veneers placed fifteen years ago, and realized it was time to replace his old porcelain veneers.  However, this time he wanted to find a cosmetic dentist who could give him a really nice smile!

His dental history relating to his two missing teeth was simple, one very similar to many other people.  About 5% of the population are congenitally missing one or more teeth.  The most common congenitally missing teeth are the upper lateral incisors, like Johnny was missing. Other commonly missing teeth are the lower second bicuspids, lower second molars and wisdom teeth.

In Johnny’s situation it was obvious when he was nine years old that the two permanent lateral incisors were missing.  So, his parents took him to the orthodontist who put him in braces and closed up the two spaces so that he didn’t have any gaps between his front two teeth and his canine teeth.  However, after it was finished his smile still didn’t look right.  Since the canine teeth were moved into the spaces of the lateral incisors he had very big teeth there in the place where normal lateral incisors are much smaller. Not only are they smaller, they are supposed to be narrower and flatter as well.

original 4 porcelain veneers used to treat missing tooth problem

After orthodontics to close the spaces of the missing teeth and four porcelain veneers were placed Johnny still didn’t have a normal looking smile, and he really wanted a great looking smile! Dr. Huefner placed 8 new porcelain veneers (see photo top of page) which completely corrected the problem with the appearance of his teeth and gave Johnny the great smile he had always wanted.

He then went to his family dentist who placed four porcelain veneers to try to make the canine teeth look more like lateral incisors.  Still, treating just the four front teeth didn’t do the trick.  Exhausted with trying to correct the problem, and thinking that there were no other options to give him a great smile, Johnny and his parents settled for the smile created for him by the orthodontist and the general dentist.  Fifteen years passed and Johnny started researching cosmetic dentists in Laguna Niguel and came to Dr. Huefner’s cosmetic dental practice to see if new techniques were yet available in porcelain veneering that might solve his problem and give him a nice smile?

Fortunately for Johnny we did have a “special trick up our sleeves” that could give him not only a normal smile, but a great smile too!  By “normal smile” we’re referring to appearing as though he has a normal compliment of teeth, four front incisors followed by canine teeth, and then bicuspid teeth right behind those. Dr. Huefner suggested to Johnny that he do something special that he  had done for a number of other patients who were congenitally missing teeth – creating some dental illusions  with porcelain veneers!  We could place eight porcelain veneers but make them each look like the teeth that should normally occupy the position rather than making the porcelain veneers look like the tooth that it is actually on.

Specifically, in Johnny’s case we would make his canine teeth (which were in the position of lateral incisors) look like lateral incisors.  Then we would make his first bicuspids (which were in the position of the canine teeth) look like canines.  Making the second bicuspid look like a first bicuspid was easiest of all.  We would give the illusions that no teeth were ever mission or in the wrong position.

Johnny and his parents were really pleased to hear the solution we offered them.  However, they said that if they were going to do porcelain veneers again could we make his teeth whiter than the original old porcelain veneers?  The answer was “of course!”  We would guide him and recommend the color of the porcelain veneers that we thought would look best, but the final decision would be Johnny’s! ( He ultimately chose BL2.) We added that we would also design the actual shapes of Johnny’s new porcelain veneers to give him a masculine smile design.

The illusionary porcelain veneer treatment for Johnny was completed in just over three weeks time with results that looked fantastic according to Johnny.  (See top photo) His comments were that he really wished that the original cosmetic dentist who did his first four porcelain veneers fifteen years earlier had been able to do that for him.

Beauty Pageant Winner Wendy and Her New Porcelain Veneers

10 porcelain veneers orange county for wendy by dr. huefner

Wendy, former Mrs. California-Globe, with a sensational smile created with 10 porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner

Several years ago Wendy was the beauty pageant winner of the Mrs. California-Globe beauty pageant.  Unfortunately the four porcelain veneers she had received by her general dentist twelve years earlier wasn’t giving her the smile she really needed.  She was actually embarrassed by the way her teeth looked. Her right front tooth had a root canal and had turned almost black.  Even with a porcelain veneer trying to cover the black root, that tooth it was significantly darker than the rest of her teeth.  Also, the four old porcelain veneers didn’t cover the teeth all the way to her gum line, and Wendy was the first to admit that the color her old veneers really didn’t look natural.  But more importantly, Wendy really want a white, bright and beautiful smile!  Being in the professional world looking her very best is extremely important to her.  And unfortunately, her teeth and smile were not allowing her to look her very best.  Wendy met Dr. Huefner when he was a judge for the beauty pageant and came to his cosmetic dental practice to replace her old cosmetic dentistry and give her a sensational smile, the kind of smile she had always wanted.

dark tooth and old porcelain veneers

Wendy had four old porcelain veneers with a dark root that showed through one of them. She wanted a bright, white smile and it was time to have her old dentistry upgraded with newer, more artistic cosmetic dentistry techniques.

Dr. Huefner placed ten Empress porcelain veneers for Wendy and whitened her lower teeth with tooth bleaching (tooth whitening).  The dark front tooth was a cosmetic challenge, as Dr. Huefner had to use some special techniques in order to mask the dark color and enable her teeth and porcelain veneers to display normal tooth colors and translucency.  Wendy chose a bight, white color known as  BL1.  Also a “Enhanced smile design” was used from the LVI Smile Catalog.

Porcelain Veneers Treat Congenitally Missing Lateral Incisor

Masculine and natural looking smile, Lance was pleased with the results of his cosmetic dentistry.

Lance, one of Dr. Huefner’s patients from Mission Viejo, had a congenitally missing lateral incisor.  Back in the late 1980s Lance had porcelain veneers placed.  After over thirty years he had experienced some recession around his veneers and one of them chipped.  He knew it was finally time for his porcelain veneers to be redone and this time he was hoping for an even better result than the first time.

So, of course, Lance’s first question to Dr. Huefner was will they better than the first set he had a few years after porcelain veneers were first introduced to dentistry? Explaining that he only wanted to have the old veneers replaced, and not have porcelain veneers placed on his other visible teeth, Lance also wanted to know how different and improved the new design of his smile would look?

Lance and his porcelain veneers after 20 years of wear

The answers Lance got were encouraging. First, huge improvements in both the materials and bonding techniques have been made over the past two decades.  Second, using some advanced cosmetic techniques to mask the congenitally missing tooth and give the allusion that all teeth were present (called lateralizing the cuspid and cuspidizing the bicuspid) he would have a vastly improved smile.

Proceeding with treatment, Lance was very pleased with the end result. He got a natural looking smile that was greatly improved compared to his original dentistry. Beginning to end, it was completed is just two visits two weeks apart.

Gnarly Teeth Transformed to Amazing Smile, Mission Viejo Porcelain Veneers

gnarly teeth before porcelain veneers mission viejo

Jessie was told his teeth were “gnarly”. He realized his appearance is important, but had neglected his teeth for a number of years. His concerns were that his teeth were chipped, crooked and discolored.

Jessie, a man in his 30s from Mission Viejo, is a regular guy.  He plays ball on the weekend, works hard during the week in the construction trade and enjoys dating.  Working hard to better himself he was taken back when one of his close friends confided in him.  “Jessie, boy you have a gnarly smile!”  He had always taken his teeth for granted, but his friend’s comments made Jessie take a closer at his teeth and smile.  His teeth were yellow, crooked and chipped.  Then thinking a bit more realized it had been over three years since he had his last dental cleaning.  He scheduled an appointment at our office for the well overdue cleaning, and also asked for a cosmetic dentistry consultation.

At his appointment he apologized that it had been so long since he had last seen a dentist.  He wanted Dr. Huefner and the dental staff to understand that in general he takes very good care of himself and has a lot of pride in the way he looks.  Jessie told Dr. Huefner that the last few days before his appointment he had thought a lot about his teeth and wanted to know what could be done to not only fix the chipped teeth, but was there any way to get a really nice white smile too?  Also, that he doesn’t expect to get “perfect teeth”, but what could be done to get “almost perfect teeth?”

chipped teeth porcelain veneers mission viejo

Eight porcelain veneers corrected Jessie’s gnarly smile. A whiter color was used and the shape of the teeth was a masculine smile design.

Dr. Huefner explained to Jessie that although his teeth were healthy, there were a a number of little things that would have to be done to do what he asked, but yes, Jessie could have an amazing smile with cosmetic dentistry.  Actually, Jessie was a perfect candidate for porcelain veneers.  They would cover the chipped, misaligned, discolored teeth and give him an end result that would actually look many times better than they did when he graduated from high school.  Jessie was happy to learn that porcelain veneers could correct his dental problems and give him the type of smile he wanted.  But, he was concerned about how long it would take.  He was the type of guy that once he made up his mind that he wanted his dental treatment done as quickly as possible.  Again, Jessie liked what her heard.  Dr. Huefner explained that from beginning to end his porcelain veneer treatment would be completed in just a little over two weeks time.

How many porcelain veneers?

Jessie asked, “How many porcelain veneers do I have to have?”  Dr. Huefner then asked Jessie two questions.  First, how white he wanted all his teeth to be and second how many teeth showed when he smiled?  Jessie looked carefully at the photo of his teeth and smile and said now that he’s come this far that he wants much whiter teeth and pretty much all the teeth he shows when he smiles to look good.  Dr. Huefner told Jessie that he could do as many or as few teeth as Jessie wanted him to do, as the choice was his.  Jessie again looked carefully at the photos of his teeth and decided to have Dr. Huefner place porcelain veneers on eight teeth.

Jessie’s treatment went smooth, and as Dr. Huefner had said, his treatment was completed in just over two weeks time.  He chose a BL2 shade for the color for this Orange County man and a masculine smile design.  Empress porcelain was used for the veneers because of its strength and inherent translucency that mimics natural enamel.  Jessie got his attractive smile with whiter, straighter teeth, and best of all, nobody ever said he had gnarly teeth again!

Crooked Smile Fixed With Porcelain Veneers in Laguna Niguel

Jenny wasn't happy with appearance of porcelain veneers

Jenny’s dentist redid her porcelain veneers three times, but she still wasn’t satisfied with the appearance.

Jenny, a Newport Beach resident, had gone to her cosmetic dentist for porcelain veneers.  Her dentist followed normally accepted protocol done by reputable cosmetic dentists, which was placing her porcelain veneers on her teeth to preview and accept prior to permanently bonding them into place.  But when Jenny previewed them she didn’t like the way they looked.  Her dentist noted her concerns, put temporary veneers back on her teeth and sent the veneers back to the lab to change the design.

A week later Jenny returned to her dentist to preview the corrected veneers, but she still wasn’t happy with the design.  Again, her dentist replaced her temporaries and send her veneers back to the lab to make modifications requested by Jenny.  However when she returned again for the third time the following week she still wasn’t satisfied with the appearance.  Unfortunately, she lost confidence in her dentist and came to our practice for a second opinion as to how her porcelain veneers might be redesigned.

At that time the most important thing we could do was listen very attentively to Jenny, noting her goals and concerns.  She didn’t like the color of the veneers, the direction her teeth were angled, the length and the difference between the length of her two lateral incisors (the teeth next to the front two teeth).

The first thing we shared with Jenny was that her dentist had done an excellent job with the fit of her temporary veneers, indicating that her dentist had demonstrated a very high skill level.  We also told her that we didn’t know her dentist, however the reputation of her dentist was very high.  This was all true!

However to accomplish Jenny’s goals several modifications in the design would be necessary.  First, to do her veneers in a lighter, whiter color as she had requested, it would be necessary to do more than just four veneers, which is what her previous dentist had recommended.  If more weren’t done, when she smiled she would show front teeth that would be significantly lighter than all the other visible teeth.  Second, we showed Jenny the photo of her smile and how her lips, bite and jaws had a significant asymmetry and the fact that there was more gum tissue on the upper right lateral incisor than the left lateral incisor.  That was why the two lateral incisors had different lengths, which really bothered her.  To correct that a simple procedure called “laser gum recontouring” would be necessary.  That would remove some of the excess gums on the right lateral incisor, enabling the two teeth to appear the same length.

Finally Jenny understood, accepted the decision to do eight porcelain veneers instead of four, and was ready to have her porcelain veneers redone with a new smile design.  We placed eight temporary veneers in the design that we envisioned would achieve Sandy’s goals.  That is called the “trial smile” or provisional stage, which serves as a template for the final veneers after Jenny approved of them.  This verification of the final design BEFORE fabricating the final veneers is a major step in achieving a successful final result for the patient.

Jenny's new porcelain veneers

Significant changes were made to Jenny’s new porcelain veneers accomplishing a successful smile design.

This story, which started with Jenny being very frustrated, had a happy ending.  She got the whiter, brighter smile that she wanted.  The excess gums on the one tooth was adjusted with the dental gum laser and the length of the two lateral incisors were more equal in length.  The angle of the teeth was changed to coincide with the direction of her face.  The only thing that couldn’t be corrected was the asymmetry of her upper lip.  However, considering that all the other issues were corrected, Jenny was very pleased at the final results of her porcelain veneers and new smile.

The “Trial Smile” Best Enables Bill to Preview and Approve of his New Porcelain Veneers

trial smile before porcelain veneers

Bill especially like the “trial smile” part of his porcelain veneer treatment. It enabled him to “test drive”or preview his new smile before the porcelain veneers were made. Modifications to the teeth shape and final color determination was made. After Bill’s written approval of the design and color Dr. Huefner’s ceramist fabricated Bill’s porcelain veneers according to detailed directions.

Bill, a successful CEO of a business in Orange County, realized that it was finally time to do something about the appearance of his smile. He had researched cosmetic dentists in Orange County, but came to our practice in Laguna Niguel because of a referral from one of our patients.

Having specific goals, Bill carefully discussed them with us.  He wanted his teeth whiter, but not too white. He wanted his teeth straight and the chipping corrected.  His canine teeth were pointed, and that had always bothered him.  Also, not having had much dentistry for years, Bill was very concerned that he would like the final results.  Could we guarantee that? Also, what type of treatment would he need?  He definitely would not consider orthodontics (braces) as an option, he wasn’t

too keen on the thought of “capping”, but had heard much over the years about porcelain veneers.  He asked if porcelain veneers would be something that could be done for him?

discolored crooked chipped teeth in need of cosmetic dentistry

Bill’s teeth were discolored, chipped and crooked. He realized it was finally time that he do something to improve the appearance of his teeth.

After carefully listening to Bill and repeating back to him the expectations that he had expressed, Bill started to become more comfortable and trusting.  After examining Bill’s teeth, Bill was pleased to learn that what he had hoped for (i.e that he could have his teeth cosmetically restored with porcelain veneers) was Dr. Huefner’s recommendation treatment of choice! But what he especially liked was when he learned about the “trial smile” process!  Dr. Huefner explained that he would first construct a prototype smile for Bill. That smile would have the size, shape and color teeth that Dr. Huefner thought would work best to satisfy Bill’s expectations.  Then, if Bill wanted any changes to the design or color, Dr.Huefner would either make those changes or specifically note those

changes be made in the permanent, final porcelain veneers.  And, Dr. Huefner said that he definitely would not have the final porcelain veneers fabricated until he achieved Bill’s written approval.  Again, Bill started getting much more comfortable with the concept of cosmetic dentistry, especially since he was going to be totally involved in the design process.

Bill’s treatment began and his “trial smile” was constructed.  After making some minor modifications to the shape of his teeth and finalizing the color veneers he wanted, Bill’s porcelain veneers were constructed using the “trial smile” as the template for the final veneers.  The treatment was a success, giving Bill an attractive and professional looking smile of someone his stature in the professional business world.

Better lip support and smile with Laguna Niguel porcelain veneers

A smile that didn’t match the person
porcelain veneers laguna niguel

Kara got a terrific smile enhancement with eight porcelain veneers. Her teeth were lengthened, the gummy smile was reduced with the dental gum laser, and porcelain veneers gave her a brighter, whiter smile that she had always wanted.

Kara, very meticulous about her appearance, is in the fashion industry.  She always dresses well and is in great shape, however her smile wasn’t.

She had braces as a child and because her teeth were crowded they removed four teeth.  Unfortunately the orthodontic technique weren’t as advanced as they are today and the braces tipped all her teeth inward.  It actually caused her to have less lip support, which is something that fashion conscious people don’t want to have happen. Also, Kara really felt her teeth were too small and that she showed too much of her gums.

Complimentary cosmetic dentistry consultation

Knowing that cosmetic dentistry would greatly improve her smile, Kara came to our practice for a complimentary consultation.  We sat down and discussed her goals and expectations.  “I want white teeth, I want them longer, I want them to lean out more, I don’t like the bonding that is on two of my front teeth, and I don’t like my gums.  What do I need done?  Will Laguna Niguel porcelain veneers take care of my problems?”, asked Kara.  Obviously, Kara knew what she wanted accomplished.

gummy smile before porcelain veneers

Kara didn’t like her short teeth and gummy smile. She wanted her teeth longer, to lean out slightly to give her more lip support and compensate for the way her braces treatment left her teeth tipped inward.

Being someone who pays a lot of attention to appearance, especially her own, Kara was right.  Doing cosmetic dentistry with Laguna Niguel porcelain veneers for her would greatly improve her smile.  Dr. Huefner suggested the following:

  • do teeth-whitening (teeth bleaching) on her lower teeth
  • place porcelain veneers on her upper eight teeth
  • the teeth bleaching on her lower teeth would allow Kara to have Dr. Huefner make the upper veneers a whiter shade without contrasting with yellow lower teeth
  • make her teeth longer
  • remove some of her gums by reshaping them with the dental gum laser
  • make the porcelain veneers wider on the side teeth to compensate for the inward tipping that her braces had caused

Kara was excited, especially when she learned that her Laguna Niguel porcelain veneer treatment, including the teeth whitening and laser gum reshaping, could all be accomplished in less than a months time.
She proceeded with recommended cosmetic dental treatment and an outstanding result was achieved (see top photo above). When her treatment was completed and she was asked what she like best Kara answered that she like the fact that the teeth were whiter and bigger, and especially that it gave her more lip support.  (Her teeth before porcelain veneer treatment leaned inward, allowing her upper lip to drop down more and thereby show less of her teeth.)

Planning Your Smile Makeover

If you are embarrassed to show your teeth when you smile, it may be time to consider a smile makeover. Today’s cosmetic dentistry techniques, materials, and technology can address virtually any flaw that is compromising the look of your smile – including cracked teeth, stained teeth, uneven teeth, broken teeth, and gaps between teeth.

Our experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner has been helping patients throughout the Laguna Niguel area transform their smiles for decades. When planning your smile makeover, we will consider several different factors, including:

  • The specific cosmetic dental problems you want to correct
  • Your own goals for your smile
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your budget

There are usually many different ways to fix a certain smile flaw, which gives you flexibility when choosing the treatments and procedures you want to include with your smile. In some cases, only a single treatment (such as porcelain veneers) may be necessary for a full smile makeover. Other patients may need a combination of treatments – such as teeth whitening, dental crowns, and porcelain veneers – in order to achieve the results they are looking for.

Dr. Huefner will examine your teeth and make a personalized recommendation based on the factors discussed above. The most effective options will be presented to you through our advanced patient education software. If porcelain veneers will be part of your smile makeover, Dr. Huefner can fit you with a “trial smile” of temporary restorations so you can test out your new smile design before we make it permanent.

If you are ready to discuss your smile makeover options in more depth with an experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call (949) 495-6322 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, and surrounding areas of Orange County, California.

Lumineers vs. Regular Porcelain Veneers: What’s the Difference?

If you are considering porcelain veneers to enhance your smile, you may be curious about Lumineers and other name-brand variations that are advertised as an alternative to traditional veneers. The main difference between regular porcelain veneers and brands like Lumineers (along with Vivaneers, Nano, Emax, and Durathin) is their relative thickness. These ultlra-thin varieties usually require no preparation of the teeth before they are applied, which is appealing for many patients. Additionally, they tend to require less reshaping than traditional veneers.

However, ultra-thin Lumineers may not provide the best aesthetic results for some patients. If they are placed on teeth that are already sufficiently thick, you may be left with a smile that looks and feels overly “bulky.” Most people require some preparation of the tooth to ensure the veneer fits and looks as natural as possible.

Another factor to consider with ultra-thin veneers is their transparency. The thickness of our Empress porcelain veneers at Huefner Sensational Smiles easily conceals any stains and discoloration on the supporting tooth. In contrast, Lumineers are so thin that the darker color of a tooth may still show through to a degree, making your smile less bright than it could have been. However, if significant discoloration isn’t a concern in your case, then Lumineers may be a good option to consider.

To find out which type of porcelain veneers is right for you, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call (949) 495-6322 to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation. We serve patients in Laguna Niguel, Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, and surrounding areas of Orange County, California.

Closing the Gaps in Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers

If gaps between your teeth are compromising the appearance of your smile, porcelain veneers can hide these gaps and provide you with a smooth, seamless smile line. Instead of using braces to close gaps – which can take over a year – porcelain veneers can achieve the same overall effect in just two short office visits. This is why veneers are often called “instant orthodontics.”

Spaced teeth can be caused by many different factors. Sometimes, teeth grow in undersized, or a discrepancy between the size of your jawbone and the size of your teeth can occur, causing extra space to appear between your teeth. Whatever the cause, porcelain veneers are a the simple, aesthetically beautiful solution.

Not everyone with spaced teeth will be good candidates for porcelain veneers. If your gaps are severe and pronounced enough, your bite may need to be realigned using traditional orthodontics for optimal oral health. However, most minor gaps between teeth can be effectively closed with porcelain veneers. Dr. Huefner has over 30 years of experience crafting veneers that are beautiful, proportionate, durable, and flattering for all types of smiles.

If you are ready to transform your smile, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call  (949) 495-6322 to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation. We serve patients in Laguna Niguel, Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, and surrounding areas of Orange County.
