What Are Instant Orthodontics?

Instant Orthodontics | Orange CountyIf you dream of having a straight, beautiful smile but cannot imagine going through the slow and sometimes painful process of having your teeth straightened, “instant orthodontics” may be right for you. Instant orthodontics refers to using porcelain veneers to achieve the appearance of straight teeth in just two dental visits at our Orange County office.

A Quick and Easy Solution to Crooked Teeth

Porcelain veneers will not truly straighten your teeth, but they can give the appearance of a straight smile. Truly straightening your teeth can take months or years. It requires a significant commitment on your part, often involving frequent office visits for adjustments. The process can be painful and very inconvenient.

Instant orthodontics gives you the look without the hassle. It only requires two office visits and no special effort on your part. There are no braces and no trays to wear. Instant orthodontics is a great choice if you have a special occasion coming up, such as a wedding or graduation. You’ll show up with your beautiful smile, ready for your close-up.

Other Benefits of Instant Orthodontics

When you choose instant orthodontics, you can correct multiple cosmetic dental problems at the same time. Porcelain veneers also correct the appearance of:

  • Discoloration
  • Chips
  • Small gaps
  • Misshapen teeth

Is Instant Orthodontics Right for Me?

During your smile consultation, Dr. Norman Huefner will evaluate your smile and your personal goals. Instant orthodontics is a great solution if you do not have the time, patience or desire to go through the teeth-straightening process, but it is not for everyone.

Invisalign® is another great alternative to traditional braces. While it does take more time and commitment than instant orthodontics, Invisalign truly straightens your teeth and may be appropriate if you are not a candidate for porcelain veneers.

We happily welcome patients from Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach and the greater Orange County area.

Planning Your Smile Makeover

If you are embarrassed to show your teeth when you smile, it may be time to consider a smile makeover. Today’s cosmetic dentistry techniques, materials, and technology can address virtually any flaw that is compromising the look of your smile – including cracked teeth, stained teeth, uneven teeth, broken teeth, and gaps between teeth.

Our experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner has been helping patients throughout the Laguna Niguel area transform their smiles for decades. When planning your smile makeover, we will consider several different factors, including:

  • The specific cosmetic dental problems you want to correct
  • Your own goals for your smile
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your budget

There are usually many different ways to fix a certain smile flaw, which gives you flexibility when choosing the treatments and procedures you want to include with your smile. In some cases, only a single treatment (such as porcelain veneers) may be necessary for a full smile makeover. Other patients may need a combination of treatments – such as teeth whitening, dental crowns, and porcelain veneers – in order to achieve the results they are looking for.

Dr. Huefner will examine your teeth and make a personalized recommendation based on the factors discussed above. The most effective options will be presented to you through our advanced patient education software. If porcelain veneers will be part of your smile makeover, Dr. Huefner can fit you with a “trial smile” of temporary restorations so you can test out your new smile design before we make it permanent.

If you are ready to discuss your smile makeover options in more depth with an experienced Orange County cosmetic dentist, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call (949) 495-6322 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Irvine, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, and surrounding areas of Orange County, California.

Closing the Gaps in Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers

If gaps between your teeth are compromising the appearance of your smile, porcelain veneers can hide these gaps and provide you with a smooth, seamless smile line. Instead of using braces to close gaps – which can take over a year – porcelain veneers can achieve the same overall effect in just two short office visits. This is why veneers are often called “instant orthodontics.”

Spaced teeth can be caused by many different factors. Sometimes, teeth grow in undersized, or a discrepancy between the size of your jawbone and the size of your teeth can occur, causing extra space to appear between your teeth. Whatever the cause, porcelain veneers are a the simple, aesthetically beautiful solution.

Not everyone with spaced teeth will be good candidates for porcelain veneers. If your gaps are severe and pronounced enough, your bite may need to be realigned using traditional orthodontics for optimal oral health. However, most minor gaps between teeth can be effectively closed with porcelain veneers. Dr. Huefner has over 30 years of experience crafting veneers that are beautiful, proportionate, durable, and flattering for all types of smiles.

If you are ready to transform your smile, please contact Huefner Sensational Smiles today or call  (949) 495-6322 to schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation. We serve patients in Laguna Niguel, Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, and surrounding areas of Orange County.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Brooks Gets New Teeth

Vicki Gunvalson and Brooks Ayers of The Real Housewives of Orange County after Brooks' smile makeover with porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner

In early November The Real Housewives of Orange County star, Vicki Gunvalson, called me on the telephone regarding her boyfriend, Brooks Ayers. If you follow the reality show, you know that Vicki is going through divorce and that Brooks is the new man in her life. Brooks, who is sharing his time between Mississippi and Orange County, didn’t, in his own opinion have a great smile. As a matter of fact, in Vicki’s words, “Brooks’ smile definitely needed some HELP”! Vicki went on to say, “Brooks is a great man. He’s smart, hard working, successful, handsome, and a lot of fun to be with. His teeth and smile just didn’t fit with the Orange County image. Brooks and I think that he really needs an Orange County smile!” Vicki informed me that she chose me to do a smile makeover for Brooks in order to transform his teeth into the great looking, straight, white, “Orange County” teeth. Vicki also told me that she would like to have a film crew in our dental office during parts of Brooks’ smile makeover to document the procedure which would air on The Real Housewives of Orange County show in the early summer. “Could you do that?” she asked me. My answer was, “Yes… absolutely!” I knew we would have to work fast because his cosmetic dental treatment would have to be completed within a month in order to be filmed for Season 7 of The Real Orange County Housewives which was to begin airing February 7th, 2012.

Brooks had very crooked teeth and his upper right lateral incisor was in cross bite. His teeth were worn short and his upper lip was slightly longer than normal, masking much of his teeth when he smiled. Vicki wanted Brooks to have an "Orange County Smile", with straight, white, perfectly aligned teeth. We had less than a month to accomplish this, as we had to complete his new smile before the last week's filming of "Real Housewives of Orange County."

Vicki brought in Brooks for his first appointment with us, accompanied by The Real Housewives of Orange County film crew. We interviewed Brooks to find out what he didn’t like about his smile and what he wanted to accomplish. He was quick to point out that he was embarrassed about his smile, that his teeth were extremely crooked and that he was not able to get braces as a child like his children have been fortunate to receive. Vicki contributed to the conversation by explaining that since Brooks is now living in Orange County and that they are a couple portrayed on a reality show, it is important that he look “the Orange County” part. That is when the fun began. Seeing the drama of Brooks and Vicki banter back and forth about his teeth, his lips, his jaws and all his little “flaws” that I needed to correct, I realized our biggest challenges were neither Vicki nor Brooks, but the short time span we had to complete Brooks’ treatment and the correction of the cross bite he had on his upper right, lateral incisor. I explained to them both that ideally he should have braces to move the tooth in cross bite into a normal position, but that would take several months to accomplish. The other alternative would be to remove the tooth in cross bite and make a bridge. Although we prefer not to remove a healthy tooth, doing that would allow me to have the best control over giving him the “Orange County smile” that he wanted as well as staying within his time restraints. They both agreed that if removing one tooth would enable me to create beautiful, straight, white teeth for him within a month’s time that they would do that. So off Brooks went to the oral surgeon and the tooth was removed.

At the "trial smile" (temporary veneer phase), Brooks and Vicki got to preview the smile design Dr. Huefner created for him. Specifically, the "trial smile" is used to determine if the patient likes the length, shape, contour and color of the "new teeth." If he (or Vicki?) didn't approve, then Dr. Huefner would change the design until it met their approval. From the "trial smile" design, Dr. Huefner's ceramist, Dave Stohlman from LK Dental Studio, would make Brooks' final porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

A couple days after Brooks had the tooth extracted he returned to our office without Vicki. We prepared his teeth for four porcelain veneers and two porcelain bridges. Then we created Brooks’ “trial smile” which are temporary veneers and bridges that we used as our template for his final porcelain veneers and bridges. This was a very important step, as the “trial smile” is used to verify that we are designing his new teeth to his liking in regards to the size, shape, length, color and alignment of his new teeth. It’s kind of like a “test drive” of the new smile. If you didn’t like the “test drive” on a car, of course you wouldn’t buy it! Good cosmetic dentists use the “trial smile” as a “test drive” of sorts, making sure that the cosmetic dentist and patient are all on the same page before the final cosmetic dentistry is made duplicating the basic design of the “approved” trial smile.

After wearing the “trial smile” for a few days, Brooks was asked to return with Vicki to give his approval. Of course, in this situation, I needed to get approval from both of them. I gathered that Vicki would want to be on board with the design, too. Without Vicki’s approval, I am very sure that both Brooks and I would get our own “reality check” from her. If there was something Brooks and/or Vicki wanted to change, I would make (or note) those changes and finalize the design before sending it to our ceramist, Dave Stohlman, at L.K. Dental lab to adjust.

Two days later, we saw Brooks, Vicki, and The Real Housewives of Orange County camera crew again in our office to film for the show. We proceeded to take photos of Brooks’ “trial smile.” After which, the three of us looked at the photos and discussed our goals. Were the teeth long enough? Straight enough? Was the shape a masculine smile design that worked well with his lips and face? Did the edges of his teeth nicely follow the contour of his lower lip when he smiled? Once we were in agreement regarding Brooks’ smile design, the actual color needed to be selected. They definitely wanted his “new teeth” to be whiter than the BL4 tooth color of the “trial smile.” I pointed out that since Brooks has a longer upper lip that naturally shadows his teeth, we should over compensate by making his teeth at least one or two shades lighter than they originally requested. Using a custom shade guide by LK Dental Studio made of actual EMax porcelain, Vicki and Brooks chose the whitest natural looking tooth color, BL1.

EMax custom shade guide LK Dental Studio

In choosing the color for Brook's "new teeth," we utilized a custom shade guide of EMax porcelain made by our ceramist, Dave Stohlman at LK Dental Studio. Right, top to bottom: A1,B1. Left, top to bottom: BL4, BL3, BL2 and BL1. Brooks and Vicki chose BL1 for his new porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

Now that the details of the smile design were agreed upon, there wasn’t any guesswork for our ceramist, Dave Stohlman, at LK Dental Studio to follow. Once I gave Dave the specific details that Vicki, Brooks and I required, he added in the artistic details – that master ceramists like him do – to make the cosmetic dentistry look exceptionally beautiful and extremely lifelike. Brooks was instructed to wear his “trial smile” (temporary veneers and bridges) for another week while Dave was completing his porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges.

Brooks had an amazing transformation with his smile makeover with porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges. We not only made his new teeth considerably whiter and slightly longer, but they were now straight, without any cross bite. The shape of the teeth created a very masculine smile and improved his self confidence.

The following week, Brooks returned without Vicki. We gently removed his temporary veneers and tried on his porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges for his approval. He loved the BL1 tooth shade and the masterfully created porcelain veneers and porcelain bridges that Dave made for him. We then bonded Brooks’ cosmetic dentistry into place with a porcelain bonding laser and he left very happy with his new smile. The real test would be the following day….”the reveal”…..when Vicki would see Brooks for the first time with his “Orange County Smile.”

The before and after photos of Brooks' teeth show an amazing transformation. One might think that orthodontic braces would have been the only way that crooked teeth could be made straight. However, it was clear that a patient with as many dental problems as Brooks, that cosmetic dentistry is oftentimes the treatment of choice. Can you see which tooth had been removed and replaced with a porcelain bridge?

The next day Brooks returned for his normally scheduled post-insertion adjustment accompanied by The Real Housewives of Orange County camera crew. We took our final photos of Brooks’ completed smile makeover while anxiously awaiting Vicki’s arrival. Once Vicki arrived, we brought her back to our studio/consultation room and for the first time she saw Brooks with his new smile. I’m not going to spill the beans about the drama of “the reveal” visit – you’ll just have to tune in and watch Season 7 of The Real Housewives of Orange County. I will spill the beans about one thing, Brooks and Vickie were both so delighted with the results that they both returned together the following week and we did a “couple’s photo shoot” for them (see photo collage at top of the blog).

Brooks Ayers, Vicki Gunvalson's boyfriend and one of the "stars" on the Real Housewives of Orange County reality show needed an "Orange County Smile." We transformed his "crooked, discolored, Mississippi" smile into a stunning "Orange County Smile." No longer is Brooks self-conscious about his teeth and smile.

This professional quality portrait photo shoot that my assistant, Kathy, and I did for Brooks and Vicki is a gift we actually have been doing for most of our smile makeover patients over the last eight years. These photo portraits serve to celebrate our patients’ “new smiles” and new beginnings that their beautiful teeth and improved appearances have created.

In a cosmetic dental practice like ours, we deal with complex smile makeovers like we did for Brooks all the time. But for us, having a film crew in our office while doing such intense dentistry in an extraordinarily short period of time was a new and challenging experience. As you might imagine, there was definitely some stress involved, but we love taking on new challenges and we certainly enjoyed our experience with The Real Housewives of Orange County reality show. In the end, Vicki was pleased with the results and we were pleased to have met her high level of expectation. I’m also very sure that if she wasn’t pleased, she certainly would have communicated that with me.

Joyce gets straight beautiful teeth without braces

Joyce got straight beautiful teeth without braces with dental veneers by Laguna Niguel cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner.

Joyce came to our Laguna Niguel cosmetic dental practice referred by a mutual colleague, Dr. Juris Bunkis, a very prominent plastic surgeon in Rancho Santa Margarita.  Her children were grown and out on their own and so it was finally time that she could start doing some things she had always wanted to improve her appearance and make herself look a little younger.

When she came to our office for her consultation the first thing she said was “I don’t like the way my teeth look and I understand you can give me straight beautiful teeth without braces.”  She went on to explain that when she told her family dentist that she wanted better looking teeth he immediately sent her over to an orthodontist.  Hesitantly, she went and when the orthodontist told her she would have to be in braces for 18 months and then wear a retainer for decades after, Joyce declined his treatment.  Then she went to a “cosmetic dentist”, who said that he could make her dental veneers to fix the color and chipping, but again, she should have her teeth straightened with Invisalign first.  After the dental veneers were made for her the “cosmetic dentist” also recommended decades of wearing retainers so that her teeth and dental veneers wouldn’t go crooked again.  Defiant that under no circumstances would she consider any orthodontics, and a bit confused, she came to our office for “one more opinion.”

Joyce didn't like her crooked, chipped, discolored teeth. She was adamant that she would not go through orthodontic treatment. She came to Dr. Huefner after being referred by plastic surgeon Dr. Juris Bunkis, who told her that Dr. Huefner could make her straight beautiful teeth without braces.

Before jumping to any conclusions about the best treatment for Joyce, Dr. Huefner asked her a number of questions.  “What do you dislike most about your teeth?”  She answered that her teeth were crooked.  “What else bothers you?”  Her front teeth were chipped along the edges and the side teeth were too pointy was her response.  “Anything else?”  She said that she really wanted whiter teeth, but had already tried bleaching.  Her teeth were too sensitive afterwards and they didn’t get as white as she wanted them.  “So, essentially you want straight, white, pretty teeth and you aren’t willing to have braces, is that right?” asked Dr. Huefner asked Joyce.  She confirmed that was precisely what she wanted.

Then Dr. Huefner carefully examined her teeth, which he found to be healthy with only a few fillings.  And they were yellow, crooked, chipped and pointy, as she had said in the beginning.  Then he told her exactly what she wanted to hear, that he could give her beautiful, straight, white teeth and her entire treatment would be completed in less than three weeks and that she would not have to have braces or any retainer.  Joyce was ecstatic…..straight beautiful teeth without braces!  Dr. Huefner went on to explain that the “cosmetic dentist” she had seen wasn’t off base at all, that orthodontics would make the dental veneering process a little easier.  However her teeth weren’t that crooked and that Dr. Huefner had successfully treated numerous patients with teeth more crooked than hers without needing to do any orthodontics at all.  He felt very confidant that he could create a beautiful smile with straight, white teeth for Joyce without any braces.

Joyce the asked how many teeth Dr. Huefner thought should get dental veneers.  In looking at Joyce’s smile, she clearly showed 10-12 teeth, thus he recommended dental veneers for her ten upper front teeth.  “What about my lower teeth?” asked Joyce.  Dr. Huefner answered that her lower teeth were pretty straight and that he thought she could use a milder bleaching treatment that wouldn’t make her teeth so sensitive.  Although they might not get as white as her upper dental veneers, he thought that they would get white enough to satisfy her.  Joyce was getting very excited about the techniques that Dr. Huefner would be using and very anxious to get started with her cosmetic dental treatment with dental veneers and teeth bleaching as soon as possible.

Lower photo: Joyce had crooked, chipped, discolored teeth. Upper photo: After dental veneers by Dr. Huefner her upper teeth were beautiful, white and straight. Her lower teeth were whiter after mild bleaching treatments.

After doing a dental exam with x-rays and taking models of Joyce’s teeth to plan her treatment, Dr. Huefner scheduled her appointments.  Joyce’s treatment went smoothly and just as Dr. Huefner had promised, she got her straight beautiful teeth without braces a couple weeks later.

As can be seen in the photos, Joyce got a great result.  The interesting thing is that she is not unlike many if not most of our cosmetic dental patients.   Almost any adult has some slightly crooked teeth, but even if orthodontics are done it doesn’t solve problems related to the color and shape of the teeth, or take the place of unnatural fillings or crowns.  So depending on the condition of the patient’s teeth and some other factors, most cosmetic dentists today can achieve the desired results with porcelain veneers and/or porcelain crowns.  And the great news about both of these treatments is that nowadays the color of porcelain veneers and crowns is very stable…THEY WON’T DISCOLOR OR DARKEN over the years like natural teeth do.  The extremely smooth surface is very resistant to stain insuring a beautiful smile with white teeth for years and years!

Straightening crooked teeth in two weeks without braces

straightening teeth without braces

Lower photo: Jennie had two crooked lower teeth and wasn't willing to undergo months of braces and years of retainer wearing. Top photo: Dr. Huefner straightened Jennie's two crooked teeth in just two weeks time utilizing two porcelain veneers.

Jennie lives and works in Newport Beach Orange County.  She had braces as a youngster, but after three decades two of her lower front teeth had become very crooked.  She remembered that her orthodontist told her she would have to wear her retainer for years, but like many others Jennie quit wearing her retainer after a year.

Fed up with her crooked lower teeth, Jennie went to a local Newport Beach orthodontist, hoping that a new retainer would straighten her crooked teeth.  But the orthodontist told her that she would need to go through braces again.  That did it!  Jennie said that at her age that she would never considering going through braces again.  She remembered that wearing braces was uncomfortable and oftentimes hurt.  Also she was just too self conscious to wear braces as an adult.  Clearly for her it was time to “check out” other alternatives to straightening crooked teeth.

Like so many people nowadays, Jennie went right to her computer to research options other than braces for straightening crooked teeth.  Her computer search led her to several articles that Dr. Huefner, a Newport Beach Orange County cosmetic dentist had written about straightening crooked teeth with cosmetic dentistry instead of braces (also called “instant orthodontics”), oftentimes in as little as two weeks time, with no need for any retainer afterwards.  That concept of straightening crooked teeth without braces really appealed to Jennie, so she called for an appointment for a cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Huefner.

After hearing Jennie’s story and what she wanted to accomplish, Dr. Huefner examined her teeth.  Yes, Jennie was an absolutely great candidate for cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneers to straighten her crooked lower teeth.  But before recommending how many teeth that he would suggest placing porcelain veneers on, Dr. Huefner needed to know if Jennie was just wanting the two crooked teeth straightened, or was she also concerned about the color, shape or position of any of her other teeth?

“No, I’m completely happy with all of my other teeth, I just want the two crooked teeth straightened!” Jennie told Dr. Huefner.  With that Dr. Huefner recommended that he place two porcelain veneers just on just those two crooked teeth.  “How many appointments and how long will it take?” Jennie then asked Dr. Huefner.

“Two one hour appointments two weeks apart, that all,” Dr. Huefner answered Jennie.  With that Jennie was very happy with all that she had heard.  Dr. Huefner said he could straighten her crooked teeth without braces and it would all be done within two weeks.  She scheduled her first appointment for the following day, and Jennie had straight, beautiful teeth two weeks later just as Dr. Huefner had promised.

The end results?  Jennie was ecstatic!  Her teeth were straight, she avoided braces and a retainer, and her entire treatment was completed in two appointments over two weeks.  How great is this today for adult patients not willing to undergo months to years of braces.  Yes, new concepts in cosmetic dentistry enable straightening crooked teeth in two weeks without braces.

More Attractive Smile and Better Lip Support for Vicki from Laguna with Porcelain Veneers

porcelain veneers laguna

Vicki's porcelain veneers gave her a younger smile and more lip support.

Vicki, from Laguna, CA, had several problems with her teeth and smile that had bothered her for many years.  Finally, after being encouraged by her friends and family she consulted with Dr. Huefner, Orange County cosmetic dentist, to discuss the options that cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneers might have for her.

First, Dr. Huefner asked Vicki to prioritize the problems that “she saw” with her teeth.  She answered, “I just hate the way they look!  They are too dark, too short, and the shape isn’t pretty or youthful either.  I was told that my teeth are so dark because they gave me tetracycline as a child.” Dr. Huefner also pointed out that because she had a malocclusion, her front teeth didn’t have a normal overbite which if corrected would give her upper lips more lip support.  Vicki answered, “I like the idea of making my lips look better but there is absolutely no way would I ever get braces at my age!  Can’t you fix my teeth and give me a nice smile without braces?”
Dr. Huefner said “Yes”, and Vicki was ready to hear how he would solve her problems with cosmetic dentistry.

Tetracycline discoloration before porcelain veneers

Vicki's had tetracycline discoloration of her teeth and an under-bite. She wanted a whiter, more attractive smile and wasn't willing to include braces in her dental treatment.

Dr. Huefner said he could place eight porcelain veneers on her upper teeth, and he would bleach her lower discolored teeth.  The veneers would be made longer and positioned slightly outwards to give her lips more lip support.  Also, since her teeth were worn and square, Dr. Huefner wanted to shape her teeth with more rounded edges, which would give Vicki a more youthful and feminine appearance.

Vicki agreed to Dr. Huefner’s treatment recommendations, but said she would be very particular about color teeth she gets.  “I’ve seen so many people who have had porcelain veneers or porcelain caps, and sometimes they look way too white and fake,” Vicki explained to Dr. Huefner.  “I want my new teeth white, but not too white.  It’s important to me that they look like I have real teeth.”  Vicki was relieved when we explained that she would be very involved in choosing the color of her new porcelain veneers.  We would make suggestions as to what we think would look best for her, but the final choice will be hers.”

Several weeks later Vicki began her porcelain veneer treatment, which was completed 2 1/2 weeks later.  By making her porcelain veneers slightly longer than her real teeth were, and bringing them out she had a much nicer and fuller smile, and much better support of her upper lips.  Regarding the color of her new porcelain veneers, Vicki chose a BL2 color from the tooth shade guide and an “enhanced”s smile style from the tooth shape library.  Dr. Huefner used Empress porcelain because of it high strength, natural tooth-like translucency and long track record among cosmetic dentists.

Vicki's beautiful new smile after porcelain veneers were placed.

Vicki was very pleased saying she got nothing but compliments from her family and friends.  “The best thing was,” she said, is that I feel great with my new smile and my veneers even make my face look younger.”

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Vicki’s smile makeover with porcelain veneers.

Predicting how your new smile will look with porcelain veneers and cosmetic dentistry orange county

orange county porcelain veneers

Roy had crooked, discolored teeth and wanted a whiter smile with straight teeth, and WITHOUT braces. Porcelain veneers were utilized to give him the teeth and smile that he always wanted, and his complete treatment was accomplished in less than a months time..

Roy is very successful and is the CEO of his own company in Orange County. But, to use his own words, “My teeth are a mess!”  He understood that his clients all looked up to him, and when it came to his teeth and smile there wasn’t much to appreciate.  In fact, his crooked discolored teeth were pretty distracting.

When Roy came to Dr. Huefner’s cosmetic dental practice in Orange County he wanted to know what Dr. Huefner could do to give him a nice smile. We took photos of his teeth and smile and together we discussed the things about his teeth that made them look so bad:

  • they were crooked
  • his one front tooth and left cuspid really stuck out
  • his gums were uneven
  • his teeth varied in color, were mostly yellowish, and he wanted white teeth

After carefully listening to Roy’s concerns we made two suggestions.  One, he could have braces to make his teeth straight, and bleach his teeth and place ultra ultra thin porcelain veneers over his upper front teeth.  The second option was to skip the 6-12 months of braces and just place porcelain veneers over nine of Roy’s teeth, a procedure we often call “instant orthodontics“.  By doing this Roy could have his new smile completed in less than a month’s time.

crooked discolored teeth before cosmetic dentistry

Not only were Roy's teeth crooked and discolored, but his right central incisor and his left canine teeth really stuck out.

Roy was very quick to respond that there was “no way in hell” that he would ever even consider braces.  “I’m just too busy and too old,” he said.  “Sounds like the porcelain veneer treatment in a month’s time is the way for me to go.”

At that point it Roy brought up some other thoughts.  “I really want to know exactly how my smile will look after your done.  In my business know exactly what they’re getting before they pay one penny.”

Viewing before and after dental photos help patients plan their cosmetic treatment

We explained to Roy that everything we do is custom, but that he will be involved in the entire design, beginning to end.  Unfortunately it is impossible for us to be able to show him in advance exactly how it will look, but there were two ways that we are usually able to overcome that.  First, I showed him before and after photos of a number of other patients I have treated with problems very similar to his (i.e. very crooked discolored teeth).

The “trial smile” is the ultimate dental tool to patient satisfaction with their porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns

trial smile temporary veneers orange county

Roy with his temporary veneers and "trial smile". After wearing his trial smile for a few days Roy returned to ask us to shorten one tooth and lengthen another. He also decided he wanted his final veneers a little whiter. The cosmetic ceramist used the photos, models and measurements of Roy's approved trial smile as the template or prototype to make his final porcelain veneers.

Second, that we would incorporate a special process we call the “trial smile” to help us all visualize the final appearance.  Basically the “trial smile” are temporary veneers made in the shape, length and color of the smile design that we will plan for Roy.  Roy will wear the trial smile for several days, kind of like a “test drive.”  Then he will come back to us and we will discuss all the features, length, shape, color, smile design, etc.  If Roy wanted us to make any changes we would make those in the “trial smile” and then when he accepted the changes we would take photos of his trial smile along with measurements of the length of all the teeth, the tooth shade he wanted, and take an impression of his adjusted “trial smile” for make a model of the adjusted and accepted final shape.  Those would all go to our ceramist in addition to any other subtle changes or refinements that Roy  wanted.  Roy was assured that we wouldn’t bond his new porcelain veneers into place without his written approval both at the “trial smile” stage and when the final porcelain veneers were tried in.

Once Roy realized that he would be intimately involved in the whole smile design process his treatment went like a breeze.  We first did some laser gum reshaping to make all the gums a the same level.  Then we prepared his teeth and put on his trial smile. Like we had spoken about, a few days later Roy returned to us and we made a couple adjustments in the trial smile that he wanted us to make.  One temporary veneer was a little too long for Roy, so we shortened it.  Another tooth on the opposite side was too short, so we added length to it.  After looking at the color he decided he wanted the final veneers just a little bit lighter in color, so we noted that as well.  Then we measured the length of all his approved temporary veneers, took photos of them and an impression to make a model of the approved trial smile for our ceramist to follow.

Roy with his very handsome new smile created with porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner.

The end result for Roy was just short of amazing.  He went from having very crooked and discolored teeth, to having straight, white teeth that was very becoming for a CEO of a very successful business.  He also got what he wanted, intimately involved in the final design, which we accomplished to his satisfaction with the “trial smile” process.

Extremely Crooked Teeth Made Straight and Beautiful with Porcelain Veneers Irvine

irvine porcelain veneers

Matt had very crooked teeth and desperately wanted to avoid having orthodontic treatment. He also didn't like the color and shape of his teeth. Matt got his beautiful new smile with eight porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner.

Matt is an achiever.  After going into the military service he was back to college working on his degree.  A handsome and ambitious young man, Matt is very committed to becoming a success.  Understanding that it’s not just brains, education and hard work that are the important ingredients to getting where he wants to go, Matt realized that his appearance are important too!

crooked teeth irvine

"I'm embarrassed to smile," Matt said. He hated the crookedness and shape of his teeth. His four incisors were too round and his cuspids were to pronounced and pointed.

“I’m embarrassed to smile,” Matt told us at his cosmetic dentistry consultation appointment.  “I’ve been told by every dentist I’ve ever seen that I need braces.  But at my age I really don’t want to go through all of that.  Is there anything you can do for me with cosmetic dentistry?”

After attentively listening to Matt, I answered “I totally understand where you are coming from Matt.  But before I answer you, can you tell me is it just that your teeth are crooked, or are there other things that you don’t like about them?”

Mat answered that:

  • I don’t like the shape of my teeth, the incisors are too round and the eye teeth are too pointed
  • My one front tooth had a root canal years ago, and it turned dark
  • I’d really like all my teeth a lot whiter

With eight porcelain veneers Matt got the great smile he had always wanted, and his treatment was completed in less than three weeks time. He chose a BL2 tooth shade from the tooth shade guide and masculine smile design from the tooth shape catalog.

Now we had enough information to make recommendations to Matt.  We explained that all his other dentists were right, that regarding his crooked teeth, braces (orthodontics) is the best way for him to go.  But we also realized that pulling a few teeth and then a couple years of braces are something most people would like to avoid if possible.  If he did go that route, at the end he would still have the teeth with the shape he didn’t like, the color of his teeth would still not meet his expectations, but the good thing would be that his teeth at least would be straight.

The absolutely fantastic news for Matt is that with cosmetic dentistry, specifically porcelain veneers, we could not only make Matt’s teeth straight, but we could also make them all the whiter color he wants and change the shape of his teeth.  It gets even better, because his entire treatment could be completed in less than three weeks time.  Those were the benefits, as we explained to Matt.  Also there was a potential complication that Matt needed to understand accept.  When someone like Matt has very crooked teeth and porcelain veneers are done to make them all straight, that  there is the potential that one or more of his very crooked teeth might need root canal treatments.  The reason is that the more crooked the tooth is, the more tooth preparation is generally needed to straighten it out in good alignment.  This increased preparation can cause tooth sensitivity and sometimes dental pain, which are both alleviated with root canal treatment.

After spending a little more time going over all Matt’s options, he decided to go forward with porcelain veneers on his eight upper front teeth.  As we had discussed, his entire treatment was completed in less than three weeks time.  Matt chose a BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide and a masculine smile design from the tooth shape catalog.

The end result for Matt was nothing short of amazing.  It gave him a huge improvement in his appearance!

You are probably wondering if Matt ended up needing any root canal treatments?  Yes, he did.  His cuspids stuck out a lot and in order to put a porcelain veneer on them that would be even with his other teeth they required more than the normal amount of tooth preparation, and required root canal treatments.  Matt was a little frustrated with that, wishing very much that the root canal procedures would not have been necessary.  However he readily admitted, he was extremely happy with his new smile and the root canal treatments and great looking straight white teeth was a lot better than the thought of having a couple teeth pulled and a couple years of braces.

“Instant Orthodontics” – Going From Having Crooked, Yellow teeth to Getting Straight, White Teeth in Just a Few Weeks with Cosmetic Dentistry

mission viejo porcelain veneers

To correct her crooked, yellow teeth Allison had twenty porcelain veneers. She wanted a "bright, white smile" and chose a BL1 tooth shade.

Allison is a forty-ish mother of three from Mission Viejo.  When her children were growing up she always put them and the family first.  “Finally the kids are grown and out of the house and it’s my time to do something for myself,” Allison said.  She went on to say that she hated her crooked, yellow teeth, but since she was an older adult she couldn’t even fathom the thought of going through a couple of years of braces.  We had treated one of Allison’s Mission Viejo neighbors, correcting her smile with porcelain veneers.  The neighbor in turn, referred Allison to our cosmetic dental practice to discuss how we might be able to help her?

She told us that she finally had the time and money to fix her teeth and some of the things about her teeth and smile that she didn’t like:

  • my teeth are too crooked, but I won’t even consider doing braces
  • my teeth are way too yellow and I’d like to have bright, white teeth
  • I’ve seen people who have bad fake looking caps, and if I decide to go ahead and do cosmetic dentistry then you have to promise me that my teeth will look natural and “real”

When teeth are crooked, patients can be treated either with braces or porcelain veneering. Braces make the teeth straight, but don't do anything to correct the color, cavities, any malformation or chipping of the teeth. In Allison's case a technique called "instant orthodontics" with porcelain veneering was utilized which gave her the beautiful, bright white smile with straight teeth that she had always wanted.

We explained to Allison that in her case we could use an advanced form of cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneering that is oftentimes referred to as “instant orthodontics”.  We wouldn’t actually be doing orthodontics per se, but the reason it is called “instant orthodontics”is because the porcelain veneers make the crooked teeth look straight and the dentistry is done in just a few weeks (almost “instantly” compared to years of traditional orthodontic treatment).  Although in many cases orthodontics is the best way to go, if the teeth are malformed, broken, have large fillings, severely discolored, etc., the orthodontics doesn’t treat that aspect.  But the porcelain veneers could correct all of those things, allowing us to create a beautiful smile with bright, white, straight and even teeth!

Allison was excited and began her porcelain veneer treatment the following week.  Since all of her upper and lower front teeth were discolored and crooked she chose to do twenty porcelain veneers.  She chose a “softened” smile style from the tooth shape catalog and a BL1 shade from the tooth shade guide.

The end results was the smile Allison had always dreamed of having with straight white beautiful looking teeth!
