Frequently Asked Questions About Porcelain Veneers

  • What are veneers?
Dental veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry in which a shell or layer of tooth-colored material is placed over the facial surfaces of teeth.
  • What are the benefits of veneers?
Veneers are aesthetically pleasing, protecting the surfaces of damaged teeth, and may eliminate the need for more extensive treatments, such as crowns.
  • What are veneers made of?
The two most common materials to create dental veneers are porcelain and a composite resin.
  • What problems can veneers correct?
Veneers are used to solve many dental problems, including worn enamel, uneven teeth, abnormal spacing between teeth, peg laterals, and more.
  • How are veneers made?
Indirect (outside the mouth) veneers are made by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, while direct (created directly on your teeth) veneers are made by your dentist during your appointment.
  • What is involved in a veneer procedure?
Typically, your dentist will shape and prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel (the outer layer of your teeth) in order to custom-fit the veneers. You will need to wear temporary veneers until your permanent veneers are ready. Your veneers will then be bonded to your teeth using different types of resin cement.
  • How much do veneers cost?
Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers at around $900 to $2500 per tooth, but can last ten to fifteen years. Composite veneers last five to seven years and cost approximately $250 to $1500 per tooth.
