Can Probiotics Fight Gum Disease?

Chronic periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease, and one that many periodontal treatments may fail to completely address. To help prevent infection from recurring following scaling and root planing, antibiotics are often used. This method has shown to improve the efficacy of minimally invasive treatments by as much as 55 percent. However, antibiotics are not well tolerated by everyone and some prefer to avoid them due to various medical concerns. Enter probiotics – specifically lactobacillus reuteri – strains of bacteria that occur naturally in the human gut and are necessary for proper immune response.

A recent study separated patients with chronic periodontitis into two groups: one that took a daily probiotic supplement with the l. reuteri strain, and one that took a placebo. After 12 weeks, 67 percent of the placebo group fell into the “high risk” category for disease progression. Only 27 percent who took probiotic supplements fell into this category, indicating that l. reuteri improves the efficacy of gum disease treatment by 53 percent, almost identical to the benefits provided by antibiotics.
