Orange County Porcelain Veneers…Better Choice Than Orthodontics?

Orange County porcelain veneers

Annie got a beautiful new smile with Orange County porcelain veneers. Her entire treatment was completed in just a couple weeks and several appointments with Dr. Huefner.

Frequently we have patients come to us with crooked teeth and are very confused about what might be the best treatment for them, braces (orthodontics) or Orange County porcelain veneers?  Although this must always be determined on a case to case basis, there are some generalities that hold up most of the time.

If a patient is young, especially in their teens, and the only problem is that the teeth are crooked, most all dentists would agree that orthodontics is first on the list of treatment options.

Annie’s teeth were crooked, discolored, worn and she had numerous cavities, fillings and several old crowns. She could have had braces to make her teeth straighter, but that still would not have addressed the other problems. Orange County porcelain veneers was the treatment she chose because it addressed all the problems, and could be completed in just a few weeks time compared to months or years of braces.

However, if the patient is an adult with crooked teeth, there are usually one or more other cosmetic dental problems that make the decision a bit harder.  For instance, most adults have worn or chipped teeth.  Braces don’t solve that problem at all.  Also most adults have had cavities, fillings or even some crowns.   Braces do a fantastic job of making crooked teeth straight, but do nothing to make unattractive teeth with cavities, fillings or old crowns look natural.  Another problem that almost always occurs with age is tooth discoloration.  Years of coffee, cola, tea and/or smoking, along with “natural aging discoloration” can never be corrected with braces.

So for adults with crooked teeth and some of the other age related teeth problems, the question is usually boiled down to whether or not they want to address all those “other” problems or just the crooked teeth problem?  If they just want their crooked teeth straightened, then by all means, orthodontics (braces or Invisalign) is a good choice.

But for those many who not only want straight teeth, but want their teeth to be whiter, without chips, without showing unsightly cavities, fillings or crowns, the optimum choice may be Orange County porcelain veneers.  Not only can Orange County porcelain veneers make teeth look white, natural and flawless, they can also be use to make crooked teeth appear straight!  This brings up another concern….time.  Orthodontics can typically take between six months to 2 1/2 years to complete the teeth straightening process.  Not only does orthodontic treatment go slower with adults, but the orthodontics isn’t over when the braces come off.  Most orthodontists will tell their patients that if they want their teeth to remain straight, that they should wear a retainer for the rest of their life.  This is where Orange County porcelain veneers really stands out over braces.  Most Orange County porcelain veneer treatment can be completed in just several weeks.  Also, since the roots of the teeth haven’t been moved no retainer is necessary.  However if the patient is a “grinder”, “clencher” or “bruxer” many cosmetic dentists will recommend they wear a protective night guard appliance at night when they are sleeping to protect the patient’s natural teeth and Orange County porcelain veneers from inadvertent chipping.

Her teeth were obviously chipped, crooked and had visible unsightly fillings. Also, they were discolored….YELLOW….and not very attractive. For a professional lady like Annie, Orange County porcelain veneers really enhanced her image and even made her look several years younger.

Our patient Annie is a typical patient of our who was confronted with the choices discussed above.  Her teeth were crooked, chipped, discolored and she had numerous fillings and a couple crowns.  She is a professional lady in her forties and realized that her smile didn’t help her look her very best.  Should she get braces or Orange County porcelain veneers?  After weighing out her options and defining that she really wanted more than just straightening her teeth, it was “a no brainer” for Annie.  She clearly understood all the advantages of Orange County porcelain veneers.  Being a very busy lady, she was even more appreciative that her Orange County porcelain veneer treatment was completed in just a couple weeks!  The end result for Annie was a beautiful smile that could have never been achieved with orthodontics alone.
