Joyce gets straight beautiful teeth without braces

Joyce got straight beautiful teeth without braces with dental veneers by Laguna Niguel cosmetic dentist Dr. Huefner.

Joyce came to our Laguna Niguel cosmetic dental practice referred by a mutual colleague, Dr. Juris Bunkis, a very prominent plastic surgeon in Rancho Santa Margarita.  Her children were grown and out on their own and so it was finally time that she could start doing some things she had always wanted to improve her appearance and make herself look a little younger.

When she came to our office for her consultation the first thing she said was “I don’t like the way my teeth look and I understand you can give me straight beautiful teeth without braces.”  She went on to explain that when she told her family dentist that she wanted better looking teeth he immediately sent her over to an orthodontist.  Hesitantly, she went and when the orthodontist told her she would have to be in braces for 18 months and then wear a retainer for decades after, Joyce declined his treatment.  Then she went to a “cosmetic dentist”, who said that he could make her dental veneers to fix the color and chipping, but again, she should have her teeth straightened with Invisalign first.  After the dental veneers were made for her the “cosmetic dentist” also recommended decades of wearing retainers so that her teeth and dental veneers wouldn’t go crooked again.  Defiant that under no circumstances would she consider any orthodontics, and a bit confused, she came to our office for “one more opinion.”

Joyce didn't like her crooked, chipped, discolored teeth. She was adamant that she would not go through orthodontic treatment. She came to Dr. Huefner after being referred by plastic surgeon Dr. Juris Bunkis, who told her that Dr. Huefner could make her straight beautiful teeth without braces.

Before jumping to any conclusions about the best treatment for Joyce, Dr. Huefner asked her a number of questions.  “What do you dislike most about your teeth?”  She answered that her teeth were crooked.  “What else bothers you?”  Her front teeth were chipped along the edges and the side teeth were too pointy was her response.  “Anything else?”  She said that she really wanted whiter teeth, but had already tried bleaching.  Her teeth were too sensitive afterwards and they didn’t get as white as she wanted them.  “So, essentially you want straight, white, pretty teeth and you aren’t willing to have braces, is that right?” asked Dr. Huefner asked Joyce.  She confirmed that was precisely what she wanted.

Then Dr. Huefner carefully examined her teeth, which he found to be healthy with only a few fillings.  And they were yellow, crooked, chipped and pointy, as she had said in the beginning.  Then he told her exactly what she wanted to hear, that he could give her beautiful, straight, white teeth and her entire treatment would be completed in less than three weeks and that she would not have to have braces or any retainer.  Joyce was ecstatic…..straight beautiful teeth without braces!  Dr. Huefner went on to explain that the “cosmetic dentist” she had seen wasn’t off base at all, that orthodontics would make the dental veneering process a little easier.  However her teeth weren’t that crooked and that Dr. Huefner had successfully treated numerous patients with teeth more crooked than hers without needing to do any orthodontics at all.  He felt very confidant that he could create a beautiful smile with straight, white teeth for Joyce without any braces.

Joyce the asked how many teeth Dr. Huefner thought should get dental veneers.  In looking at Joyce’s smile, she clearly showed 10-12 teeth, thus he recommended dental veneers for her ten upper front teeth.  “What about my lower teeth?” asked Joyce.  Dr. Huefner answered that her lower teeth were pretty straight and that he thought she could use a milder bleaching treatment that wouldn’t make her teeth so sensitive.  Although they might not get as white as her upper dental veneers, he thought that they would get white enough to satisfy her.  Joyce was getting very excited about the techniques that Dr. Huefner would be using and very anxious to get started with her cosmetic dental treatment with dental veneers and teeth bleaching as soon as possible.

Lower photo: Joyce had crooked, chipped, discolored teeth. Upper photo: After dental veneers by Dr. Huefner her upper teeth were beautiful, white and straight. Her lower teeth were whiter after mild bleaching treatments.

After doing a dental exam with x-rays and taking models of Joyce’s teeth to plan her treatment, Dr. Huefner scheduled her appointments.  Joyce’s treatment went smoothly and just as Dr. Huefner had promised, she got her straight beautiful teeth without braces a couple weeks later.

As can be seen in the photos, Joyce got a great result.  The interesting thing is that she is not unlike many if not most of our cosmetic dental patients.   Almost any adult has some slightly crooked teeth, but even if orthodontics are done it doesn’t solve problems related to the color and shape of the teeth, or take the place of unnatural fillings or crowns.  So depending on the condition of the patient’s teeth and some other factors, most cosmetic dentists today can achieve the desired results with porcelain veneers and/or porcelain crowns.  And the great news about both of these treatments is that nowadays the color of porcelain veneers and crowns is very stable…THEY WON’T DISCOLOR OR DARKEN over the years like natural teeth do.  The extremely smooth surface is very resistant to stain insuring a beautiful smile with white teeth for years and years!

Ladera Ranch Porcelain Veneers for Casey

Casey's beautiful new smile with eight Ladera Ranch porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner. She chose a BL2 tooth color and a "softened" smile style for the tooth shape catalog.

Casey is a single mom from Ladera Ranch.  She has a good job and works hard to raise her daughter.  She is also ready to pursue a new relationship.  But she told us that getting back into the dating mode has been a struggle for her.  Casey is somewhat shy and feels that she is oftentimes competing with younger and more attractive women.  She came to our Orange County cosmetic dental practice to consult with Dr. Huefner about getting porcelain veneers for her upper teeth.  “My teeth are what I’m most self conscious about,” she told us.  “I don’t smile as much as I should, so I figure that having a pretty smile will really help build my self confidence.”

When we evaluated Casey’s smile we could clearly see why she was so self conscious.  Her teeth were not very white.  They were also crooked, had old discolored fillings and some white marks where cavities has once started years ago.  But Casey also had very beautiful lips and skin and she didn’t show much of her gums when she smiled.  If we could give her nice teeth her smile would be a knock out!

Casey had crooked, discolored, unattractive teeth and she was very self conscious when she smiles. She came to Dr. Huefner hoping that she would be a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneers.

The great news for Casey was that she was a perfect candidate for Ladera Ranch porcelain veneers.  Since she clearly showed eight of her upper front teeth when she smiled Dr. Huefner recommended doing eight porcelain veneers.  Casey wanted whiter teeth, but because she had an olive complexion which tanned more in the summertime, Dr. Huefner recommended a BL2 porcelain veneer color from the tooth shade guide.  He knew she wanted “white teeth”, but was also worried that if she chose a color that was too white that her veneers would contrast with her skin color and look artificial and “fake”.  However Dr. Huefner told Casey that the ultimate choice of the tooth color for her veneers would be hers. Casey appreciated Dr. Huefner’s thoughts and concerns and ultimately chose the BL2 shade that Dr. Huefner had recommended.

With regards to the shape of her Ladera Ranch porcelain veneers, Dr. Huefner and Casey looked through numerous tooth shape designs from the tooth shape library.  She said that she definitely didn’t want cuspids that were too pointy, and Dr. Huefner recommended that she also not get cuspids that are too flat, as flat cuspids often project an older, worn smile.  Casey wanted to look younger and more attractive, so she chose a slighty rounded cuspid shape.  With regards to her incisors, she didn’t like shapes that looked to square, nor did she like the ones that were too round.  Knowing all that, the shape from the tooth smile library that Casey chose for her new veneers was the “softened” smile style from the LVI Smile Library.

After working through the design of her new veneers Dr. Huefner was ready to start.  He prepared her teeth for the eight porcelain veneers, then placed temporary veneers based on the “softened” smile style.  Casey wore the temporary veneers a few days and then came back to discuss the color, length and tooth shape style.  Because her bite was a little asymmetric, Dr. Huefner recommended adding a little more length to the teeth on her left so that they would follow the curve of her lower lip, as did her right teeth.  Having the edges of the front teeth follow the lower lip when the patient smiles is a concept utilized by many cosmetic dentists, it is often called “following the smile line.”  Casey confirmed the elements of the final smile design, color, length, symmetry and tooth shape and the prescription for her new porcelain veneers was sent to Dr. Huefner’s ceramist.

Two weeks later Casey returned to Dr. Huefner. He removed Casey’s temporary veneers and tried in her new porcelain veneers to get her approval.  Dr. Huefner stressed that if there was anything about the new veneers that she wanted changed that this was the time to do that.  After they were bonded in place he couldn’t make any changes to the color or add any length.  However he could shorten and/or round the veneers after they were bonded.  Casey gave her full written approval and Dr. Huefner permanently bonded her eight new Ladera Ranch porcelain veneers in place.  The results…..A VERY BEAUTIFUL SMILE!

Dana Point porcelain veneers correct Shelly’s yellow teeth problem

Dana Point porcelain veneers

Lower photo: Shelly hated the dark yellow color of her teeth. She also thought her front two teeth were too long. Upper photo: With Dana Point porcelain veneers Dr. Huefner gave Shelly a beautiful smile. She chose a BL2 shade, slightly shorter length of her front two teeth and an "enhanced" smile design from the tooth shape library.

Shelly is retired and lives in Dana Point.  She is a very active lady, loves the out doors.  On almost any day she can be found either spending time either on the beach or playing tennis.  She came to Dr. Huefner for Dana Point porcelain veneers because she just hated the very yellow color of her teeth.  Shelly also didn’t like that he teeth were somewhat crooked and chipped.  A pretty sharp lady, Shelly like so many of our patients had done her research before she came to our cosmetic dental practice.  One of her friends had porcelain veneers and she really hoped that she would be a good candidate for Dana Point porcelain veneers too.
She was pleased to learn from Dr. Huefner that he thought the Dana Point porcelain veneers would be an excellent treatment for her.  Before Dr. Huefner could get started with her treatment he needed to know a few things:

  • How white did she want her Dana Point porcelain veneers?
  • How many teeth did she want to have Dana Point porcelain veneers on?
  • What shape did she want her teeth to have?
  • How long did she want her new teeth?

He teeth were almost an A4 shade, which is pretty yellow.  The yellowness is something that she really wanted to get rid of.  She hated that!  Dr. Huefner showed her the tooth shade guide, holding several different tooth color tabs against her teeth so that Shelly could start to get the feel for the different colors that she had to choose from.  She tentatively decided that the BL2 shade was her favorite.

With Shelly's tan skin and dark yellow colored teeth her smile wasn't as pretty as she wanted. After one of her friends got her smile fixed up with porcelain veneers Shelly hoped that Dana Point porcelain veneers would solve her cosmetic dental problem.

Based on how white she wanted her teeth the next question could be answered.  When Shelly smiled, looking from the front or side, ten of her upper front teeth were visible.  And since those were all so yellow she decided to have Dr. Huefner make her ten Dana Point porcelain veneers.  Thus, when she smiled, only the whiter Dana Point porcelain veneer teeth would show and none of her very yellow teeth.

Regarding the length of her teeth, she thought her front two teeth were just a little to long.  Thus, Dr. Huefner said he would make the Dana Point porcelain veneers on her front two teeth a little shorter that they were.  When it came to shape selection, Dr. Huefner showed her several of the tooth shape catalogs that he commonly used.  She said that she didn’t like the teeth that were too square and neither did she like the teeth that were too round.  The LVI enhanced smile style was chosen as it often one of the most popular designs for women, especially if their goals are to look a little younger and more feminine.

White Porcelain Veneers for Newport Beach lady by Dr. Huefner

white porcelain veneers BL1 shade

Lower photo: Julianne had very brown and short teeth. She wanted a more attractive smile and had always wished she had white teeth. Upper photo: Dr. Huefner gave Julianne a more youthful and attractive smile with white porcelain veneers. Julianne wanted the whitest shade that Dr. Huefner could make for her. She chose the BL1 tooth shade.

Julianne from Newport Beach is a very attractive lady in her 60s.  She has always made a commitment to look her best.  She works out regularly, is fit and trim.  Julianne also dresses well, and has much pride in her appearance.  As a baby boomer, she certainly has achieved the envy of most of her peers.  Many would say that she has it all, charm, personality and looks.  There was just one thing that Julianne was missing, and it really bothered her.  Julianne had short, brown unattractive teeth!

When Julianne came to Dr. Huefner she knew precisely what she wanted.  “I want white, younger looking teeth,” she told Dr. Huefner.  She also told Dr. Huefner that she was hoping that he could do white porcelain veneers for her.  Her last dentist told her that “veneers wouldn’t work for her” and that he would have to do porcelain caps.  When he told her that she started doing some research herself on cosmetic dentistry options.  She learned that white porcelain veneers were a more conservative cosmetic dental procedure and would be healthier dental treatment for her teeth and gums than porcelain crowns, and was really hoping that Dr. Huefner could do white porcelain veneers for her.

Because of Julianne's tan, olive complexion Dr. Huefner recommended BL2 or BL3 tooth shades, which wouldn't contrast much with her skin color and would have a more natural appearance.

When Dr. Huefner examined Julianne’s teeth he found them to be very healthy.  Yes her front teeth were really worn down from her teeth grinding habit (bruxism), but they didn’t have any previous cavities or fillings.  This was good!  Julianne was very excited when Dr. Huefner explained to her that he thought she would be an excellent candidate for white porcelain veneers.  He could make her new smile look absolutely beautiful with whiter, longer, more youthful looking front teeth.  “The only real question,” Dr. Huefner asked Julianne, “is how white do you want your white porcelain veneers to be?”  Dr. Huefner explained some very important points about the color of porcelain veneers.  First, that she could choose the color of her new white porcelain veneers.  He would make recommendations as to the most natural color that would work with her face and the color of her skin, but the ultimate choice would be hers.  He pointed out that she had a pretty nice tan, and that since she wasn’t sixteen any more really white teeth might look a little too over the top for her.  Dr. Huefner brought out the dental shade guide and began showing Julianne the different colors that she might want to consider.  Dr. Huefner’s preference for her was either a BL3 or BL2 shade.  Both of those were lighter than the color most natural teeth, but still looked “real and very nice.”

Julianne chose the BL1 tooth shade, the whitest color that appears at the far left on the tooth shade guide.

But Julianne knew what she wanted.  She wanted white porcelain veneers.  She asked Dr. Huefner, “What is the most white porcelain veneer tooth color that you can make for me?”  Dr. Huefner went to the tooth shade guide, pulled out the tooth shade farthest on the left, the BL1 tooth color.  When he put that color up to Julianne’s very dark brown teeth she knew instantly that BL1 was the shade of white porcelain veneers that she wanted him to make for her.  “My whole life I’ve always wanted really white teeth, I definitely want BL1!” she told Dr. Huefner.

Julianne got the more attractive and youthful smile that she had wanted. She chose the BL1 color for her white porcelain veneers. She did bleach her lower teeth, but they did not get as white as the BL1 shade. But her lower teeth doesn't show that much. She said that she eventually plans on getting white porcelain veneers for her lower teeth in the future.

Then Julianne had two other important questions.  “Will my white porcelain veneers get darker over the years like my natural teeth did?”  She was very pleased with Dr. Huefner’s answer.  White porcelain veneers are very color stable and should not change color at all provided she has good oral hygiene, brushes every day and get’s her teeth cleaned every six months.  The second questions was what about her lower teeth?  If she got white porcelain veneers for her upper teeth and didn’t get white porcelain veneers on her lower teeth, how would that look?  Dr. Huefner explained to Julianne that about two thirds of the patients he treats with white porcelain veneers just bleach their lower teeth.  The other one third get white porcelain veneers and their lower teeth as well.  If she was committed and persistent, the teeth bleaching would whiten her lower teeth considerably, but most probably not as white as BL1.  However most people won’t notice that much and it may not be a problem.  Julianne thought and said that she would start with white porcelain veneers on her upper teeth, teeth bleaching on her lower teeth, and if the teeth bleaching of her lower teeth wasn’t white enough for her that later on she would come back to Dr. Huefner and get white porcelain veneers on her lower teeth.

Julianne’s white porcelain veneer treatment was completed a few weeks later.  She was ecstatic with the results!  “I couldn’t be happier with the color,” she told Dr. Huefner.  He teeth bleaching got her lower teeth whiter, but as Dr. Huefner had predicted, they did not get as white as the BL1 color of her white porcelain veneers on her upper teeth.  Julianne said that she would return to him next year to get white porcelain veneers on her lower teeth.  Dr. Huefner also made Julianne a night guard, a dental appliance worn at night by people who grind their teeth.  The night guard would help prevent her lower teeth from wearing down any more and also help protect her upper white porcelain veneers from breaking if she continued to brux her teeth at night while she was sleeping.

Crooked, yellow discolored teeth fixed with Orange County Porcelain Veneers

Lower photo: Dori disliked her crooked, yellow teeth and wanted a nice smile with straight, white teeth. She had tried teeth bleaching, but it didn't get her teeth white. She said that going through orthodontics or Invisalign to straighten her teeth was out of the question. Dori came to Dr. Huefner to see if cosmetic dentistry could solve her problems. Upper photo: Dr. Huefner gave Dori a great looking smile with straight, white teeth by placing Orange County porcelain veneers.

Dori, an administrator in a large Orange County business, was dissatisfied with the appearance of her crooked, yellow teeth.  Her teeth were healthy and strong, but in her own words “my teeth need some help.”

What Dori wanted was straight white teeth.  She had tried teeth bleaching, which whitened them up somewhat.  But she wasn’t dedicated and committed enough to do the teeth bleaching consistently enough to give her the white teeth she really wanted.  “I want my teeth white and all the same color, how can you do that for me?” asked Dori.

The other thing she wanted was straight teeth.  Dr. Huefner discussed braces and Ivisalign orthodontics with her, but admittedly Dori just didn’t have the patience to go through months or possibly more than a year of orthodontics to straighten her teeth.  “Without braces, what else can you do to make my teeth straight?” was Dori’s second question.

Dori's smile before Orange County porcelain veneers.

Fortunately for Dori, her dental problem, crooked yellow teeth, could be easily corrected with Orange County porcelain veneers.  Porcelain veneers are a treatment that has virtually transformed modern cosmetic dentistry over the past decade.  After showing Dori examples of numerous other patients that Dr. Huefner had successfully treated with Orange County porcelain veneers she started to get excited.  “How many visits?” and “when can I be done?” were Dori’s next questions.  Less than a handful of dental visits and in less than a month’s time were the answers that Dr. Huefner gave her.

After Orange County porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner, Dori had an incredibly beautiful smile. Her teeth were straight and white, as she had been wanting them to be for many years.

Dori started her Orange County porcelain veneer treatment the following week and the results Dr. Huefner achieved for her was absolutely stunning!  She got the beautiful, straight, white teeth and amazing smile that she had always wanted.
