Mission Viejo Health Care Professional Revitalizes Her Smile with New Porcelain Veneers and Porcelain Crowns

mission viejo porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers

After replacing her old dentistry with all-porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers and a porcelain bridge, Michelle had the more attractive, cleaner, whiter and more professional looking smile that she wanted.

Michelle is a health care professional in her late 60s who practices in Mission Viejo, CA.  She has always had dental problems but every few years would go to her dentist at the time and get a new filling, crown or bridge.  Then one day she realized that despite decades of her always doing what her dentist had recommend, fixing her broken or decayed teeth, she had a pretty unattractive smile.  Her gums had receded showing black lines around the roots, her teeth were yellow and few of her teeth matched in color, and she felt her teeth made her appear older.  It was time to see what could be done to give her nice looking teeth and a much younger looking smile.

When Michelle came in to our office she expressed her concerns.  “I want my teeth to look nicer, to be white and for them all to match.  I’m frustrated that after going to dentists for years and always following their recommendations that my teeth look as bad as they do,” said Michelle.

Upon examining Michelle’s teeth it was obviously clear that her concerns were well founded.  Instead of her dentists ever giving her a comprehensive plan to restore her teeth and make them look good she had become the victim of what many dentists call “the crown of the year club” or “let’s fix the next worst thing type of dentistry.”  Each year or two her dentist would find one problem, usually the worst thing in her mouth, and recommend that be fixed, usually with a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown.  He would also mention that some other things were wearing out as well and would ultimately need fixing, but they could get around to doing that dentistry in the next year or two.

yellow worn teeth before cosmetic dentistry

After years of following her dentists recommendations Michelle realized that although her teeth were healthy the appearance of her teeth and smile had much to be desired. She wanted whiter teeth, for them all to match, and she didn't want any black lines around the crowns at the gum line.

Before giving Michelle our recommendations we asked her again to tell us her goals:

  • she wanted whiter teeth and them all to match
  • she didn’t want any metal or black lines from the crowns to show around her gum line
  • she said that she was a health care professional in a very high profile office, and it was important that she look healthy, clean and professional
  • since she was in her late 60s, it would also really be nice if she had a younger looking smile

Based on Michelle’s wishes our treatment recommendations were to replace all the visible porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns that were so dark and yellow with whiter all-porcelain/non-metal crowns and one dental bridge.  The other teeth that didn’t already have crowns could be made whiter to match her new dentistry by placing porcelain veneers on them.

When Michelle heard our treatment plan for her she understood why and how our recommended dentistry would necessary to achieve her goals.  “But isn’t that going to take dozens of office visits,” she asked?  Actually Michelle was right if we were going to do her dentistry the same way that her other dentists had treated her, one tooth at a time.  In Michelle’s case we would break up her treatment into two phases.  First, we would start with her upper teeth, doing all her new all-porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers and dental bridge in just two visits.  She couldn’t believe that all of her upper teeth would done in just under three weeks time!

At the next we would place her lower porcelain veneers and all-porcelain crowns and again, that would all be completed in less than three weeks time.  Michelle was excited that her dentistry could be done in such an efficient and timely manner and scheduled to begin her treatment two weeks later.

After a more comprehensive approach to having her dentistry done Michelle finally had white, straight teeth that looked clean, professional, younger and more feminine. She chose a BL2 tooth color and an "enhanced" smile style for the shape of her teeth.

During her treatment Michelle was involved in selecting the color of her teeth.  She chose a BL2 tooth color from the tooth shade guide.  We made her new teeth slightly longer and more rounded, which along with whiter teeth are characteristics of younger, more feminine teeth.  Regarding the shape, Michelle chose the “enhanced” smile style from the tooth shape library.

The end result for Michelle from Mission Viejo was beautiful, a whiter more youthful and more feminine smile.  It also achieved her goals of being “cleaner” and “more professional” looking.  As a busy professional it was difficult for Michelle to be out of her office much.  After her cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneers were completed she told us that one of the things that she appreciated the most was that so much was completed in such a short amount of time and in only a few dental visits.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Michelle’s smile makeover with new all-porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers and a porcelain bridge.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Smile Transformation with Porcelain Crowns and Porcelain Veneers Newport Beach

porcelain crowns newport beach

After replacing Jenny's old porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns with new all-ceramic crowns and also placing four porcelain veneers, Jenny's new smile was absolutely stunning! No more black line around her gums or fake, unnatural color. Her new teeth looked beautiful and real.

Jenny from the Newport Beach area is the mother of three.  In her childhood she had many cavities and fillings, and when she graduated from high school and got her first job her family dentist put caps on her six front teeth.  Her dentist asked her what color she wanted them and she told him she wanted him to make her front caps “white”, which he did.  When he put in the new caps her teeth looked much better than they did with all the cavities and fillings, so Jenny was reasonably happy with the improvement.  But as the years passed, she came to be very dissatisfied with the appearance of her caps (“caps” and “crowns” are used interchangeably to mean the same thing).

Jenny hated the ugly black line around her old porcelain caps

black line around old caps

Jenny had many cavities and fillings on her front teeth as a child so had six porcelain-fused-to-metal caps placed. The caps were an improvement, but she never really liked the way they looked. Then after thirty years her gums had receded and she could see a black line around the gums which she really hated. She wanted to replace her old dentistry and finally get a natural looking, beautiful smile and never have to worry about a black line showing up in the future.

When Jenny came to our office to discuss replacing her old caps she had two main concerns.  First, the caps were “white”, but very opaque and unnatural looking. Second, her gums had receded a little over the past three decades and there was a black line around her crowns at the gum line.  She said to us, “If I have you replace my caps you have to promise me that I won’t ever get a black line again and that my new caps look real!”

Obviously Jenny wanted to know more about why her old dentistry looked so bad and why she had the black line around her old caps.  So we explained it to her.  “Jenny, when you had those caps done thirty years ago your dentist made them out of porcelain that was fused on top of metal caps, so I want you to understand that under the white porcelain is a thimble of metal.  The technique your dentist used was very commonly used in that era and still used today.  There were many famous movie stars that had the same kind of caps that you did. I’ve watched old movies and I’ve noticed stars like Ann-Margret, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton, Sophia Loren and Dyan Cannon appears to have had that type of crowns on their teeth a few decades ago.  Even Hilary Clinton had that type of crown on one of her front teeth years ago,” we told her.  We went on to explain that the problem is because there is metal under the porcelain the crown doesn’t allow light to reflect or go through it as it would with a natural tooth.  That is why the tooth looks opaque and fake looking.  For that reason we recommended replacing the porcelain fused to metal crowns with non-metal/all-porcelain crowns.  That would mimic the natural light characteristics of natural teeth.  A further note, it appears that most or all of the above mentioned celebrities have had their old porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns replaced with newer, more natural looking crowns.

With regards to the black line around Jenny’s crowns that was also due to the metal under her crowns.  After her gums receded it exposed the tiny edge of the underlying metal thimble of the crown.  Also, another problem with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns is that unlike natural teeth, light isn’t able to enter into the tooth, travel up the roots and lighten the gums from within like it does with natural teeth.  The blockage of light being unable to enter the crown and root creates a situation where the gums around porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns is darker.  Both of these problems, black line and/or dark gums around the crowns issues will also be corrected by using the non-metal/all-porcelain crowns.

Then we needed to clarify some concerns about the color of Jenny’s new all-porcelain crowns.  Did she want to choose the color herself as she had done before?  Or, did she want us to choose the color so that the six crowns to be made would match the color of her other teeth?  Or did she want all the upper teeth that showed when she smiled to be whiter and the same color?  This was a concern because Jenny actually shows ten upper teeth when she smiles, not just six.

Jenny said that she definitely wanted her teeth whiter, all ten of the visible teeth she shows, including her side teeth.  So, since her four side teeth already had large fillings in them we recommended placing porcelain veneers on those four side teeth so that the four side teeth would also be the same lighter color as her new all-porcelain crowns.  The porcelain veneers would also be designed to replace the old mercury fillings that were on those teeth side teeth.

So, Jenny chose to have her old dentistry replaced with six all-porcelain crowns to replace the six ugly porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and four porcelain veneers to cover her side teeth and replace the mercury fillings in them.  She chose a BL3 tooth color from the tooth shade guide and one of our most popular feminine smile designs from the tooth shade catalog (specifically the LVI Dickerson “enhanced” smile style).

Her new dentistry was very attractive and clean looking, with a whiter natural color with tooth-like translucency.  There was no black line around her gums and there would never be, even if her gums receded years from now.  The dark color of her gums returned back to normal with the new all-porcelain crowns because light was now able to enter the teeth through the crowns.

As different as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Jenny was amazed, as when she viewed her before and after photos she looked so different.  “Wow, those pictures make me look as different as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” said our very happy Newport Beach patient.  “I’m so glad I replaced my old caps and finally, for the first time in my life, I have a beautiful smile!”

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Jenny’s all-porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers and/or treating the problem of black lines on crowns at the gum line.

Goofy Teeth – Porcelain Veneers for Aliso Viejo Financial Executive Who was Afraid of the Dentist Dramatically Changes His Appearance and Self Esteem

aliso viejo porcelain veneers

Below: Allen was very self conscious and embarrassed about his crooked, yellow teeth and the discoloration of the filling on his right lateral incisor. But most of all he had bad childhood memories of when his classmates would call him "Goofy teeth." Above: Allen could have had orthodontics, teeth whitening and new fillings to improve his smile, but he wanted really great looking teeth and he would not even consider braces. Thus, Dr. Huefner created a beautiful smile with straight, white teeth by making Allen eight porcelain veneers. His entire treatment was completed in less than three weeks time.

Allen is a workaholic!  Being in the financial industry in these difficult times is very trying and requires an exorbitant amount of his time and energy.  Being great at his job and taking extremely great care of his clients has paid off for him.  Now getting ahead, Allen decided it was finally time to play catch up, and take care of something he has neglected and wanted to do something about for over two decades – the appearance of his teeth!

When Allen came in to our office to discuss cosmetic dentistry he was embarrassed and shy about discussing his dental problems.  It was obvious that he was afraid of the dentist and what kind of treatment he would need to have.  When patients are scarred, nervous and distrusting we find it is essential to build rapport and establish trust and confidence before recommending any dentistry.  So, to truly find out where Allen was coming from we started by asking him questions.  What brought him to our office? Did he have any pain or something specific that he wanted treated?  When was his last dental visit?  Has he ever had a bad dental experience? Did he have any dental fears?  Was there anything about the appearance of his teeth and smile that he wanted to change?

crooked splayed teeth before "instant orthodontics" with porcelain veneers

Allen's crooked, splayed front teeth were a huge source of embarrassment and hypersensitivity about the appearance of his teeth. His goal was straight, white teeth and to never have to be self conscious about his teeth and smile again.

What we discovered was that Allen hadn’t seen a dentist in twenty years and at his last dental appointment he had had a tooth ache and the dentist pulled his tooth.  It was a horrible experience for Allen that left him afraid of dentists and dentistry.  Also, we discovered that Allen desperately wanted to improve the appearance of his teeth and smile.  When he was in high school they would call him “Goofy teeth“, and that humiliating nick name had very detrimental effects on his self esteem.  What Allen wanted was dentistry done in a comfortable, painless way and he was very interested in cosmetic dentistry!

It was obvious that Allen would best served by treating him with oral conscious sedation dentistry.  This is a very safe and effective way of dramatically reducing the anxiety of dentistry with patients who are very nervous and apprehensive about their dentistry.  The conscious sedation patient isn’t put to sleep but just sedated to a very comfortable level with a combination of several pills taken orally and often combined with nitrous oxide.  In addition to making the patients very relaxed, they often have little or no memory of the dental visit. It is also a very useful adjunct to use for patients who are difficult to get numb or who have a hyperactive gag response.

Allen got the great looking smile that he had always dreamed of having with eight porcelain veneers. Allen chose a BL2 shade for the color and a masculine smile design from the tooth shape library.

After discussing oral conscious sedation with Allen he said “I definitely want that,” and looked much more relaxed and less anxious about discussing his dentistry.

Next, we started discussing what he had in mind with regard to making his teeth look better.  What didn’t he like about his teeth?  What did he want changed?  “I hate the way my teeth are crooked and my front two teeth are spaced,” he said, referring also to his childhood nickname, “Goofy teeth.” He also said he wanted white teeth and if he was finally going to fix his teeth he wanted his teeth to be beautiful.  “I don’t want anyone ever to look at my teeth and judge me negatively again,” he exclaimed!

Allen had basically two choices.  He could bleach his very dark teeth, getting them considerably whiter, then replace some of his old fillings and finishing up by getting braces to make his teeth straight.  He would have a much better looking smile, but it would take a total of 6-9 months of treatment.  “That is out of the question,” Allen stated.  “I’m much too busy and there is no way in the world would I consider braces.”

We told Allen that we understood completely, but in cases like his where his crooked teeth could be treated with braces we always want to give our patients that option.  Actually in Allen’s case, we were recommending porcelain veneers as the treatment of choice.  That would make his teeth straight in a very short period of time and would actually make Allen’s teeth look much nicer than braces and teeth whitening.

“So how do porcelain veneers work, what’s involved and how long will it take?” Allen then asked?

“Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded over the crooked, chipped or discolored teeth to make them look like beautiful, straight teeth,” we told Allen.  “You can actually choose the color your new teeth will be and your entire treatment is just a couple of dental visits, which we can do with the oral conscious sedation that we mentioned, and your new smile will be completed well within a couple weeks time!”  We also explained to Allen that we would need do some slight reshaping of his teeth in order to accommodate the porcelain veneers or they would end up looking too thick, which is one of the major complaints from patients who have had “prep-less” Lumineers.

After further discussing advantages and disadvantages, and risks and potential complications of his treatment options Allen decided to have Dr. Huefner place eight porcelain veneers on his upper teeth and bleach his lower teeth.  He loved knowing that he could actually choose the color of his porcelain veneers and that they would never change color over time, as his natural teeth had done.

Allen’s porcelain veneer treatment visits were done with oral conscious sedation and his entire treatment was completed within three weeks.  His new smile was absolutely beautiful!  Allen chose a BL2 porcelain shade from the tooth shade guide and a masculine smile style from the tooth shape library. Dr. Huefner had his ceramist place some slight surface texture and slight incisal translucency to make the new porcelain veneers look natural, like real teeth.

Allen completed his smile makeover with porcelain veneers having much more confidence and self esteem, from both having the treatment done that he had always been fearing, and also from finally getting an extremely attractive smile with beautiful teeth.  And one thing for sure for this Aliso Viejo executive, nobody would ever call him “Goofy teeth” again!

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Allen’s porcelain veneer treatment and/or dentistry with oral conscious sedation.

Realtor Wants More Listings So Gets Orange County Porcelain Veneers to Improve His Appearance and Professional Image

Upper photo: William had Dr. Huefner place eight porcelain veneers and got straight, white teeth and a more masculine and professional looking smile.

William, an ambitious Realtor in his early thirties wanted more listings.  He was moderately successful in the San Fernando Valley, but after moving to Orange County he found the competition between Realtors for new listings to be almost overwhelming.  After months of working very hard and not seeing much fruits for his efforts he finally asked a very successful Realtor in his office to help mentor him.

“Image is key one to getting new listings”, his mentor told William.  “You’ve got to promote yourself heavily here in Laguna Niguel so that everyone knows your name and hopefully, your face.” Then he told William something about his personal appearance that shocked him!  “William, your teeth and smile don’t look their best.  How can you expect people to have confidence that you’re sharp and professional when your teeth are crooked, broken and yellow?  Your business card needs to have a great photo of you smiling, and when prospective clients meet you for the first time they need to know that you care a lot about yourself.  Your appearance says a lot about that.  They need to know that you are going to take great care of them and you are the best professional that you can be.”

William's mentor told him something very personal that shocked him. "If you want to get more listings and be more successful as a Realtor you need to improve the appearance of your teeth."

When William looked at his teeth in the mirror and at some of his closeup photos, he knew his mentor was right.  It was time to see a cosmetic dentist.

When William came to us he told us the story.  He followed it up telling us that his short term goal was to get more listings in Laguna Niguel, but his long term goal was to be one of the most successful Realtors in Orange County.  He was committed to doing the hard work, but wanted us to help give him a friendly, professional, great looking smile with cosmetic dentistry.

William had done his homework before coming in to see us.  He had studied his teeth carefully and knew all his “smile flaws”:

  • He wanted whiter teeth.  His were yellow and his front two teeth didn’t match.
  • He wanted all his teeth to be the same color. His right front tooth had a discolored bonding which was chipped.
  • His teeth were all slightly crooked and he wanted them straight.
  • Four of his left side and front teeth leaned inwards (called cross bite).

We looked closely at William’s teeth and he showed ten of his upper teeth when he smiled.  Based on his goals Dr. Huefner recommended that he make ten porcelain veneers for William.  When William looked at his teeth he felt that he only really showed eight teeth when he smiled.  He asked if he could just do the eight teeth, and if later on he felt he should do two more he would.  Dr. Huefner agreed he could do it that way if that was what he really wanted.

When Dr. Huefner designed William’s smile he chose a “masculine” smile design from the tooth shape library.  Cosmetic dentists often impart gender in the size, shape and length of the teeth.  For someone like William, a big masculine guy, Dr. Huefner recommended front teeth that were a little more square on the corners.  For women, especially those who want to look younger or more feminine, Dr. Huefner often will recommend the design for the front teeth to be more rounded.  The “enhanced” smile design is one of the most popular design utilized for women, which is a more feminine smile design, not something well suited for him.  William also chose a BL2 shade from the tooth shade catalog.

After having Dr. Huefner make him eight porcelain veneers William got the great looking smile that he needed to enhance his career in real estate. His teeth were now straight, even and white and Dr. Huefner even corrected the cross bite he had on several of his left teeth.

After making William the eight porcelain veneers he had a much improved smile.  His teeth were whiter and all uniform in color.  They were straight and the cross bite on the left side corrected by making the veneers lean out instead of leaning inwards.  He got a mature, very appropriate smile design that really enhanced his professional image.

Very pleased with the end result, William couldn’t wait to show off his new teeth with his mentor.  He also had an appointment with a professional photographer later that week and he couldn’t wait to have a portrait of the new, improved William on his business card and professional advertising.

We couldn’t guarantee that William will get more listings now that he has eight porcelain veneers. But we are absolutely convinced that his improved image is going to help his career and greatly improve his chances for success in a very competitive career over his professional lifetime!

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about William’s porcelain veneer treatment.

Model and Mrs. Nevada Beauty Pageant Winner Comes to Dr. Huefner for Orange County Porcelain Veneers Before the Mrs. U.S.-Globe Beauty Pageant

orange county porcelain veneers

Tierra got her beautiful new smile with eight porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner. She placed in the top fifteen at the Mrs. U.S.-Globe beauty pageant and is now pursuing her modeling career.

Tierra, a dancer and model and mother of two, had short, worn teeth.  After becoming Mrs. Nevada, which entitled her to compete in the Mrs. U.S.-Globe beauty pageant, Tierra realized that she was in desperate need of cosmetic dentistry to enhance her smile.  Knowing that longer, whiter, prettier teeth would enhance her chances in the Mrs. U.S.-Globe pageant and her modeling career in general, Tierra flew out to Dr. Huefner’s cosmetic dentistry practice for a smile makeover with porcelain veneers.

short worn teeth due to bruxism habit

Tierra's short, worn teeth made her smile look 20-30 years older than she was. She knew that by making her teeth the same length as they were before her grinding shortened them she would have a much prettier smile.

When Tierra arrived for her initial consultation we took photos of her teeth and smile.  Tierra was a nighttime bruxer (one who grinds their teeth at night when sleeping) and had worn her teeth down considerably.  Her teeth were short and square and a slight yellowish color.  Dr. Huefner pointed out that her teeth actually looked twenty to thirty years older than she was!  Also, the edges of her teeth were flat.  To give Tierra a more attractive, feminine and youthful looking smile Dr. Huefner recommended placing eight porcelain veneers.  The new porcelain veneers would be longer, rounder and whiter in color.  The edges of her upper teeth (i.e. edges of her new porcelain veneers) would follow the curved contour of her lower lip, called “following the smile line,” rather than being flat and straight. The end result would be a much more attractive smile and would help her in the beauty pageant competition and also her modeling career.

Tierra, with her new smile is now a successful model.

Tierra began her cosmetic dentistry almost immediately, as the Mrs. U.S.-Globe beauty pageant was right around the corner.  Her eight porcelain veneers were fabricated in two weeks time and the resulting new smile created by Dr. Huefner was stunning.  Since Tierra is still a nighttime bruxer, Dr. Huefner also fabricated a night guard bruxism appliance to keep her from wearing her lower teeth down.

Dr. Huefner, being a pageant judge and sponsor naturally attended the Mrs. Globe pageant and was there to watch Tierra. She competed extremely well, was a crowd and judge favorite, and easily made it into the top fifteen.

Tierra's new porcelain veneers were longer, whiter and more naturally shaped than her short, worn teeth. The edges of her upper veneers followed the curve of her lower lip when she smiled, called "following the smile line." All and all, Dr. Huefner created a much more attractive and youthful smile for Tierra.

Newport Beach Grandmother Wanted a Younger Looking Smile Too and Porcelain Veneers Were the Answer for Her!

Lower photo: Rochelle didn't like the color of her teeth, and the two old crowns and the old plastic bonding that didn't match. She is sixty, but wanted her smile to help make her look younger again. Upper photo: Rochelle had two new all-porcelain crowns and six porcelain veneers placed. She chose a B1 color shade and an "enhanced" smile design from the tooth shape catalog.

Grandma, why are your teeth so dark?

Rochelle from Newport Beach is a very nice lady and grandmother of five.  One day she had her grandson Blake on her lap and he started looking at her teeth.  “Why are your teeth so dark Grandma?” he asked her.
“Oh, it’s because I’m old,” Rochelle answered him.

And then it hit her!  “I’m only sixty, I don’t want to look old,” she said to herself.

For the next few weeks Rochelle kept thinking about what her grandson Blake said to her and how she answered him and she kept looking at her teeth in the mirror.  She decided it was time to see a cosmetic dentist and find out what could be done so that she didn’t have older looking “grandma teeth.”

When Rochelle finally came to our cosmetic dental practice in Orange County she told us the story that got her motivated to finally consider improving the way her teeth.  “I don’t want to try to look like I’m twenty again,” she told us.  “That would be ridiculous!  But it would be nice if my teeth could go back in time about twenty years so I would have younger looking teeth again.  Can that be done?”

older looking teeth in need of cosmetic dentistry

Rochelle was devastated when her grandson Blake wanted to know why her teeth were so dark? She answered that it was because she was old, but then realized she didn't want to look old!

Dr. Huefner told Rochelle that before he answered her he needed to know what she meant by “younger looking teeth”?  What did that mean to her?  How did she think that younger looking teeth look different than her teeth did now?

Sixty Year Old Newport Beach Grandma wanted whiter teeth

“Well,” she answered, “I know younger looking teeth are much whiter than mine.  I don’t smoke, but I used to drink a lot of cola and I still drink a couple cups of Starbucks every day.  I know my teeth have gotten a lot darker and yellower.”

So Rochelle defined the most important thing to her, that her teeth all look whiter and not that dark, yellow color.

“But I don’t want them to be too white either,” she continued on.  “I see so many people my age here in Newport Beach who have extremely white teeth and everyone can tell that they’re fake.  It’s important to me that they are whiter, but not too white!  I want them to look like their my teeth, not like they’re caps.”

We then asked Rochelle, “Other than color, what else don’t you like about the appearance of your teeth?” Rochelle said that on her front three teeth she had two caps and one bonding, and that none of them matched her other teeth.

After carefully listening to Rochelle’s concerns the solution for her was pretty straight forward. Dr. Huefner recommended replacing the two old crowns with two new all-porcelain crowns, and then placing six porcelain veneers.  We would make all her teeth whiter, but not too white, and her new smile would look younger, but not over-the-top.  She will definitely get a new smile that would look way better.

Porcelain Veneers and Two Porcelain Crowns Were the Answer for Rochelle

Rochelle got an amazing improvement in the appearance of her smile with her new porcelain veneers and two all-porcelain crowns, making her teeth look at least ten to fifteen years younger. She chose a whiter color, but didn't want to go too white. The shape of her teeth were more feminine and youthful too. The end result for her smile makeover made Rochelle feel much more confidant of her appearance.

After discussing things over with her husband, Rochelle accepted Dr. Huefner’s treatment recommendations.  Her entire treatment, two new all-porcelain crowns and six porcelain veneers, was completed in just a couple weeks time.  Rochelle chose a B1 color from the tooth shade guide, one of the whitest natural tooth color shades, but not as white as the four bleaching color shades BL4, BL3, BL2 and BL1.  She chose the “enhanced” smile style from the tooth shape library, which is a very feminine and younger smile design, very appropriate for Rochelle.  The end result was a beautiful smile transformation for the very lovely Newport Beach grandmother of five!

Gummy smile fixed with non-invasive laser gum reshaping – Orange County Cosmetic Dentist

laser gum reshaping

Top photo: Paul didn't like his gummy smile, which also made his teeth appear too short. Middle photo: Immediately after laser gum reshaping which removed the excess gum tissue around Paul's upper front teeth. Bottom photo: One week after laser gum reshaping Paul's gums had completely healed. He showed less gum tissue when he smiled and his front teeth didn't look as short. Paul also wanted his teeth to be whiter, so the next step for him to do was teeth bleaching.

Paul from Lake Forest, CA, is a sales rep.  He’s a friendly, outgoing guy who is pretty darn successful because he takes great care of all his clients.  He is very confidant in his ability, but there was something that bothered him about his appearance – he showed too much of his gums when he smiled!  Oftentimes this also creates an esthetic dental problem, because if there are too much gum tissue covering the teeth then it can make normal length teeth look too short as well.

After being bothered about the “too much gum showing” issue for several years Paul finally came into our office to ask if anything could be done?  Before answering Paul we needed to make sure there weren’t any other issues that he was concerned about?

We asked him if the spacing between his teeth bothered him.  Also did he like the color and shape of his teeth?  “No, Doc,” Paul answered, “I’m OK with all that.  I don’t need perfect teeth, just hate how much of my gums I show when I smile.  I wouldn’t mind my teeth being a little whiter, but I’m not interested in any kind of major cosmetic dentistry.

So for Paul the solution was very simple.  We could reshape a little of his excess gum tissue with the dental gum laser, which would result in showing less gums and also make his teeth appear more normal in size.  We would do that first, and then if he wanted them whiter we could bleach his teeth the following week.

Paul asked, “Is the laser stuff surgery?”

“No Paul”, Dr. Huefner answered.  “Laser gum reshaping is a very minor non-invasive procedure that only needs a little local anesthetic and heals up in less than a weeks time.  You might feel like taking an Advil or Tylenol that night, and you should stay away from any foods that are acidic or spicy for a few days, but it should go fine and in a week your gums will be healthy, pink and normal looking.”

Paul wanted to know how long the procedure took and if he could do it right then?  Dr. Huefner answered that it would take less than a half hour and he could get started right away if he wanted.

Paul said, “Yep, let’s do it!”

We gave Paul a little local anesthetic around his gums and did the laser gum reshaping as we had planned.  He came back the following week, everything had healed up very nicely and was ready to start the teeth whitening procedure.

The end result was this gentleman from Lake Forest had a much improved, less gummy smile and all it took was one dental office visit!

“My children’s friends are laughing at my crooked teeth” – porcelain veneers and straight teeth for San Juan Capistrano mother of three

san juan capistrano porcelain veneers

Lower photo: Marcia had eight porcelain veneers placed fifteen years ago and her teeth were still crooked. She didn't like her uneven gums, her receding gums had exposed dark colored roots and stains around her old veneers. She really wanted straight, white teeth. Upper photo: We replaced Marcia's eight old porcelain veneers with a new technique that made them look straight and even. We covered over her dark roots with her new porcelain veneers and she chose a much whiter color.

Marcia works hard in her family business in San Juan Capistrano.  She is the mother of three and is very active supporting her kids in after school and weekend activities.  She had always had crooked, discolored and chipped teeth, so had porcelain veneers placed on her front teeth fifteen years ago by her family dentist.  Even though her front teeth looked better than they did before her porcelain veneers, the dentist didn’t use one of the newer cosmetic dentistry techniques that also could have made her teeth straight.

What really bothered Marcia was that one day one of her children came home crying.  When Marcia asked her what was wrong she heard something she never expected.  One of her daughter’s friends said that Marcia had ugly, crooked teeth!  Now Marcia’s daughter was embarrassed and hurt.

After calming down her daughter Marcia started thinking about what was said.  She knew her teeth were crooked, but did people really think her teeth were ugly?  Then Marcia started examining her teeth more closely.  “Yep, she was right,” thought Marcia.  Her teeth were crooked, her gums had receded over the years, her discolored roots showed, there was very dark discoloration around her old porcelain veneers.  She certainly didn’t have the pretty smile she would like to have.  Marcia came to the conclusion that it was time to look into newer options of cosmetic dentistry, replace her old porcelain veneers and get a great looking smile.

old crooked porcelain veneers

Marcia's daughter came in crying one day because one of her girlfriends mentioned that Marcia had ugly, crooked teeth. After careful consideration Marcia realized it was time to replace her old porcelain veneers and get the straight, white teeth and beautiful smile that she had always wanted.

Before recommending any specific treatment we asked Marcia to list all the things she didn’t like about her teeth and smile. She was very quick to answer this question:

  • my teeth are too yellow, I want them whiter
  • my teeth are crooked, I want them straight
  • my gums are uneven
  • my gums have receded and I don’t like the way my roots show

“I’m a pretty bad case, aren’t I doc?” said Marcia.  “Will I have to have braces?  Surgery?  How many years will it take to fix my teeth so I can have a pretty smile?”

When Marcia heard Dr. Huefner’s recommendations she was elated.  No, she wouldn’t need braces, as her teeth could be made straight just by replacing her old porcelain veneers, but by using a newer technique.  No, she wouldn’t need surgery either.  Her uneven gum on her right lateral incisor could be made even by simply reshaping it with the dental gum laser.  All of the root areas would be covered with the new porcelain veneers and she could get the straight, white, beautiful teeth and great looking smile that she wanted in just a few weeks time!

“Let’s do it!” said Marcia. We began her treatment right away.

Marcia chose a BL2 tooth color from the toot shade guide and "enhanced" smile design from the tooth shape library.

One of the things that we also needed to discuss was how white to make Marcia’s new porcelain veneers.  After careful consideration, and closely looking at the color of her teeth and comparing them to the tooth shade guide, Marcia chose a BL2 tooth shade (color) for her new porcelain veneers.  She also chose an “enhanced” smile design from the LVI tooth shape library.

Marcia’s cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneer treatment was completed in just three weeks time.  Now this great mother of three from San Juan Capistrano has a beautiful smile created with just eight porcelain veneers.  “When I’m with my kids I know that now they are proud of way my teeth look, now I have a beautiful smile”, Marcia exclaimed after her treatment was completed.  “A nicer result I couldn’t have asked for.”
