Crossbite Correction with Porcelain Veneers Orange County

crossbite correction with porcelain veneers orange county

Wayne had a crossbite and very crowded teeth. As a businessman he is very busy and refused any notion of orthodontic treatment. On the TV show 'Extreme Makeover' Wayne saw someone with horribly crooked teeth corrected with porcelain veneers and wanted to know if that could be done for him?

Wayne, a developer in Coto de Caza, was in desperate need of dental help, treatment to correct his crossbite and crooked teeth.  When he first came to Dr. Huefner for a cosmetic dentistry consultation he told us, “When I smile all I can see are my two eye teeth (canine teeth) sticking out.  I’m embarrassed.  I give business presentations to clients all the time and I know they’re thinking that if I can’t take care of my own teeth how can I be trusted to take care of their business?”

As a y0uth Wayne’s parents tried to get him to have orthodontics.  But being very active with school and sports he refused orthodontic treatment.  After graduating from college Wayne did talk to one orthodontist who told him that because he had waited so long that it would take at least two years of braces in addition to having several teeth pulled to make room for his crowded teeth and correct his crossbite.  Again Wayne said he was too busy, and no longer would consider braces as an acceptable treatment for him.

Wayne told us that a few years ago he had seen the TV show ‘Extreme Makeover‘ where a cosmetic dentist had straightened someone’s crowded teeth with porcelain veneer treatment.  That idea stuck in his mind and Wayne came to us wanting to know if porcelain veneers would work to correct his crossbite and crooked teeth?

crossbite correction with porcelain veneers trial smile

Dr. Huefner started by placing a "trial smile" with temporary veneers for Wayne. This gave Wayne to test drive and approve of the design of his porcelain veneers prior to their fabrication. Wayne liked the design but wanted the final porcelain veneers to be whiter.

Waiting patiently as Dr. Huefner examined Wayne’s teeth, Dr. Huefner gave Wayne the encouragement that he was hoping for.  Yes, porcelain veneers could be utilized to give Wayne straight teeth and a nice smile.  Although technically not orthodontics, many cosmetic dentists call the procedure that Wayne wanted “instant orthodontics.”  However Wayne needed to understand that orthodontics is still the best way to correct severely crowded teeth like his.  “I understand that braces is the best way to go, but there is no way in the world I’m ever going to do braces.  I’m just too busy to spend the time to do that!” said Wayne.

With that understood between the two of them, Dr. Huefner said that he could straighten Wayne’s teeth by doing nine porcelain veneers on his upper teeth and his entire treatment could be completed in less than a month’s time.  If later on Wayne wanted his lower teeth done Dr. Huefner could do that for him as well.

Wayne's "instant orthodontic" correction with nine porcelain veneers made in shade BL2. Although cosmetic dentistry like Wayne had is technically not orthodontics, he did end up with straight, white teeth and a beautiful smile. Wayne said the best part was that his entire treatment was completed in less than a month's time.

Wayne accepted Dr. Huefner’s treatment plan and his cosmetic dental treatment was started the following month.  Dr. Huefner began by first reshaping several of Wayne’s lower teeth, especially the one lower canine that really stuck out.  Then he placed Wayne into his “trial smile“, or provisional temporary veneers that enable Wayne to preview and try out the smile design that Dr. Huefner made for him.  Dr. Huefner used a BL4 shade for Wayne’s “trial smile“, and Wayne asked that the final porcelain veneers be made a little lighter.  Thus for Wayne’s final veneers Dr. Huefner made them with a BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide.

The end results of Wayne’s final porcelain veneers was incredible!  He went from having a cross bite and yellow, crooked teeth to straight white upper teeth in just a month’s time.

Porcelain Veneers and Porcelain Crowns Combined for Spectacular Smile Makeover

Replacing unattractive old dentistry
"mission viejo porcelain veneers"

Jacqueline got a much more attractive and youthful smile by replacing her old dentistry with porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns. Her smile was made more youthful by slightly lengthening her upper front teeth and having the edges of the upper teeth follow the curve of her lower lip when she smiles. That is an advanced smile design concept called "following the smile line".

Jacqueline, an accountant from Mission Viejo, was fed up with her old dentistry.  She had porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns placed 10-15 years ago and they just didn’t look good any more.  Her mouth had changed over the years.  She had some gum disease and her gums receded showing the black line around the porcelain fused to metal crowns.  The gum disease also caused her teeth to shift and some small unsightly gaps between her teeth developed.  It was time for Jacqueline to replace her old dentistry with new dentistry and upgrade her smile.  She wanted nice looking teeth and a great smile!

The first thing that Jacqueline needed to do was define her goals.  Did she just want to replace her old porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns with all-porcelain non-metal crowns or did she want a whiter smile and all of her teeth to be straight, perfectly aligned and in balance with her lips and face? Although her front teeth were crooked, her back side teeth leaned in as well (her upper bicuspids).  If she wanted a broader, fuller smile those teeth could be made lighter in color and brought out so they didn’t appear to lean in by doing porcelain veneers.

Tooth color is one of the first things to consider
 crooked teeth mission viejo

Jacqueline's old dentistry did not enhance her appearance. The color was off, which was especially noticeable around her gums. Jacqueline's teeth had shifted, turned and spaced. She wanted a more youthful and feminine smile with lighter colored teeth that were straight and even.

Dr. Huefner explained to Jacqueline that in defining her goals, the first question that she should answer is what color she wanted her new dentistry that was replacing her old dentistry?  If she was happy with the color of her side teeth, then her old dentistry could be made to match that color and she would need less teeth treated.  However, if she wanted a whiter, brighter smile, then she should consider doing more teeth so that they would all be the same whiter color.

After serious consideration Jacqueline said she really wanted whiter teeth.  He goal was a more attractive and more youthful smile. Thus, Jacqueline asked Dr. Huefner to replace her old porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns with new all-porcelain non-metal crowns and place porcelain veneers on her other visible teeth. In total, Jacqueline chose to have 12 of her upper teeth treated with new dentistry.  (She also decided on replacing a couple old crowns on her back teeth.)

Because Jacqueline wanted whiter teeth Dr. Huefner recommended that she bleach her lower natural teeth so that they would be whiter as well.  That way there wouldn’t be a color contrast between her upper and lower teeth.

Following the smile line

Since Jacqueline wanted a little more youthful smile, Dr. Huefner made her teeth a little longer with the porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns and following the “smile line“, a concept cosmetic dentist very frequently follow whereby the edges of the upper teeth follow the curve of the lower lip when the patient smiles.  That wasn’t done by Jacqueline’s original dentist who did the old crowns.

Jacqueline chose the “enhanced” smile style from the tooth shape library and a BL2 shade from the tooth shade guide.  The end result, which was a spectacular smile with porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns, was completed beginning to end in just under a month’s time for a happy Mission Viejo lady.

Crooked Smile Corrected with Porcelain Veneers Rancho Santa Margarita Instead of Orthodontics

Sharon didn't like her dark, worn and crooked teeth. She refused orthodontic treatment as an option and elected to have cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneers.

Sharon, from Rancho Santa Margarita, had a crooked smile.  Her teeth were worn and angled towards her right hip.”When I see my smile in the mirror it looks like I’m lopsided and walking on a hill,” said Sharon at her cosmetic dentistry consultation.

Upon looking carefully Sharon’s teeth were actually in pretty good shape.  “Sharon, except for the wear and discoloration your teeth are very strong and healthy.  Bleaching your teeth and then having braces might be the most conservative way for you to get the straight smile you want,” Dr. Huefner told her.

instant orthodontics rancho santa margarita

Sharon's beautiful smile with porcelain veneers. Note how the edges follow the curve of her lower lip, called "following the smile line" by cosmetic dentists. She chose a BL2 shade, a whiter yet very natural looking tooth color.

“I don’t think so,” said Sharon to Dr. Huefner.  “I already had braces as a kid and now I’m in my 50s.  There is no way I’d even a year of braces.  And, I know I’d never wear the retainer afterwords.  What other choices do I have?”

Actually Sharon is an excellent candidate for cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneers.  Dr. Huefner told Sharon that he could create a beautiful smile for her, the teeth would be straight and whiter if she liked.  Also, Dr. Huefner would not only make the edges of her teeth even, but he would lengthen them slightly (to compensate for the wear) and follow the curve of her lower lip (called the smile line) for a more youthful, feminine smile.

“How long would that take?,” Sharon asked Dr. Huefner.

Dr. Huefner explained to Sharon that beginning to end her new smile with porcelain veneers could be completed in three weeks time.  “Three weeks!”, exclaimed Sharon.  “That’s great, way better than a year or two of braces.”

Sharon went on to explain that she was very concerned about the color of her new porcelain veneers.  She has seen people with really white, fake-looking porcelain veneers, which she didn’t like.  However, she did want the new porcelain veneers to be whiter than her natural teeth presently were.”

“That’s no problem,” Dr. Huefner explained to Sharon.  “You choose the color and I’ll design the shape and length of the teeth to make you look your best.  I suggest you might like a BL2 or BL3 color, it’s a youthful color that has nice natural translucency and is real looking.”

Sharon accepted Dr. Huefner’s recommendations, chose an “enhanced” smile style from the LVI smile library and a shade BL2 from the tooth shade guide.  Her straight teeth with porcelain veneers, often called “instant orthodontics, were completed in three weeks time.  “I love my new smile,” Sharon exclaimed!  “I feel cleaner and don’t feel like I’m walking on a hill any more.”

On no! I’m going to lose a front tooth.

Tammy with her porcelain bridge to replace her missing front tooth and porcelain veneers on several of her other teeth. Beautiful teeth for a beautiful smile, for a beautiful wedding day!

Tammy from Irvine came to our office because her “front tooth was hurting”.  Unfortunately, Tammy had periodontal disease and her left lateral incisor had so much infection that the bone around the tooth was destroyed beyond the point that any treatment could repair.

“You mean I”m going to lose a front tooth?”, asked Tammy.  “How could that be?  I’m only in my 30s.  I thought people lost teeth from gum disease when they were old.  I can’t believe this is happening to me.  I’m getting married in two months!”

periodontal disease spaced teeth

Tammy had periodontal disease and one of her front teeth was infected so bad that it had to be extracted. Tammy's wedding was in two months and she wanted a beautiful smile.

Fortunately for Tammy there was a solution.  Her gum disease could be treated so that she wouldn’t lose any more teeth and a permanent porcelain bridge made to replace the tooth that needed to be removed.

After her tooth was extracted, a temporary bridge placed and her periodontal disease was treated Dr. Huefner said it was time for her to make some decisions.  “Tammy, before I go ahead and make your permanent bridge, I need to know if you just want me to make the bridge to match your other teeth, or do you want to make any other changes in your teeth and smile?, asked Dr. Huefner.

Tammy was quick to reply.  She said that she didn’t like the color of her teeth.  “Could they be whiter?”, she asked.  Also, she didn’t like the spaces around her teeth and the fact that they slanted to one side.  She wanted to know what could Dr. Huefner do to give her a really great smile for her wedding?

porcelain bridge irvine

Compare the before and after photos. Can you tell which tooth was infected and had to be removed? Swollen, red gums and spaced teeth are an indication of periodontal disease.

Dr. Huefner explained to Tammy that he could still do the porcelain bridge to replace her missing tooth, but he could also place porcelain veneers on several of her upper front teeth.  That would enable him to control the color, shape and length of her teeth and give her an incredible smile.

“Dr. Huefner, I know that I want to have a beautiful smile for my bridal photos.  Let’s go ahead with your recommendations and do the porcelain veneers too,”  Tammy said.

Three weeks later Tammy’s new smile with porcelain veneers and a porcelain bridge to replace her missing tooth was completed.  She chose an “enhanced” smile design from the tooth shape library and a tooth shade BL1 from the tooth shade guide.  Tammy, the bride-to-be from Irvine, got the beautiful smile she wanted.  And as you might imagine, a few months later she got married and looked fantastic in her bridal photos!  Nobody had any idea that she was missing one of her front teeth.

Please feel free to comment or ask questions about Tammy’s porcelain veneer and porcelain bridge treatment.

Transforming Kristen’s Old Veneers into Dazzling Smile with New Porcelain Veneers Irvine

Not happy with her four old porcelain veneers
porcelain veneers irvine

Kristen replaced four old porcelain veneers with ten new ones. She chose a BL1 tooth shade, slightly lighter than she wanted because her lips naturally shadowed her teeth, which made them appear slightly darker.

Ten years ago Kristen from Irvine had some issues with her front teeth.  They were spaced, discolored and had large fillings.  So, since she wanted a more attractive smile her family dentist placed four porcelain veneers on her front four teeth.  “It was a huge improvement,” she said, “I’m glad I did it but now my profession is in sales and I think it’s really important that that I have a great smile.”
At her cosmetic dentistry consultation here in Orange County, Kristen described what kind of smile she wanted:

  • straight teeth
  • white teeth
  • even and well proportioned teeth
  • side-back teeth that didn’t lean inwards, so she would have a broader looking smile
Removing old veneers?

Ten years ago Kristen had four porcelain veneers placed to match her other teeth. She decided she wanted a whiter, brighter and broader smile and came to Dr. Huefner to replace the old porcelain veneers.

“Is it hard to get my old veneers off,” she asked Dr. Huefner?  She was pleased to learn the answer, that replacing Kristen’s old porcelain veneers and placing new porcelain veneers is a pretty straight forward dental procedure.  Also, the old porcelain veneers can be removed safely and easily, usually taking only about five minutes per tooth.

Choosing the best color for her new veneers

Dr. Huefner explained to Kristen that to get what she wanted, and since she shows twelve upper teeth when she smiles, that ten porcelain veneers would be the best way for her to go.  Since she wanted “whiter teeth”, this would enable most of the teeth she showed when she smile to be the same “white color”.  Also, by placing porcelain veneers on Kristen’s back-side teeth, this would allow Dr. Huefner to widen the teeth for the broader smile that she wanted.

“Color is something we need to seriously discuss,” Dr. Huefner told Kristen.  He explained that even though she shows 10-12 teeth when she smiles, her teeth are all set back and inwards relative to her lips.  This is an important concept to grasp before choosing the color of her new porcelain veneers.  Since her lips will always shadow her teeth a bit more than normal, it tends to make them appear a little darker than the color that she probably wants.  Thus Dr. Huefner suggested that she compensate by choosing a tooth color that is one half to one shade lighter than the color she thinks she wants.

Kristen accepted Dr. Huefner’s recommendations and had him place ten porcelain veneers.  She chose a BL1 shade from the tooth shade guide, and bleached her lower teeth.  Regarding the “smile style” from the tooth shape library, Kristen chose the “enhanced” design.  Kristen’s smile makeover with new porcelain veneers was completed in four dental visits over a three week period.

After her smile makeover was completed we asked Kristen if anyone had said anything about her new smile?  “Yes, I’ve had several, but the best one was from my husband who said that now I have a dazzling smile!”

We’re pleased that this Irvine lady is so satisfied with her “dazzling new smile”created with porcelain veneers.

White Porcelain Veneers for Senior Lady from Mission Viejo

Old looking teeth

Martha thought her teeth looked very old and wanted whiter teeth.

“I have old looking teeth,” said Martha, a senior from Mission Viejo.  “They are dark, chipped and worn and it looks like I have dentures.” At her cosmetic dentistry consultation, Martha told Dr. Huefner that she really wanted “white teeth”, and that she just didn’t want to look so old any more!

Upon examining Martha’s teeth, Dr. Huefner found that her teeth were pretty healthy.  But, like she said, over the years they had worn down and shortened, discolored, and had numerous chips and old fillings that had broken or were starting to fall out.  Because they had shortened so much and the edges of her teeth were all very flat, Martha had that “denture look” that she complained of.

Martha was fortunate, giving her a better looking smile with whiter, younger looking teeth is rather easy today with modern cosmetic dentistry.  In decades past dentists would use “caps” or plastic composite bonding. Today the treatment of choice for someone who has problems like hers is to place porcelain veneers which are bonded onto her teeth.  The new teeth can be made younger looking by making them the same length and shape as her teeth were many years ago. The color, length and shape of her teeth can all be restored to a give her a smile that takes years off her face.

Bright white teeth

Martha got the bright white smile and more youthful looking teeth with porcelain veneers by Dr. Huefner.

As far as the color goes, Martha could choose any color she wanted from the tooth shade guide.  Martha told Dr. Huefner that she trusted him to make the teeth the right size and shape, but she wanted to choose the color because she wanted to make sure that she had “bright, white teeth!”  After much discussion Martha said she wanted one of the “whitest shades available” and chose a BL1 shade from the tooth shade guide with minimal opacity to make her teeth appear even whiter.

This happy senior from Mission Viejo got her bright white smile in four dental visits over three weeks time and was delighted with the results of her new smile! “Yep, they’re white,” she said.  “That’s what I wanted!”  Dr. Huefner replied to Martha that they were whiter than he would have chosen for her, but the fact that she was happy with the color she chose was really what mattered.

Crooked to Straight Teeth in Three Weeks with Porcelain Veneers Newport Beach

Straight teeth needed in very few appointments and without braces
crooked teeth treated with porcelain veneers

Doug, a prominent CEO in Newport Beach, was self conscious about his crooked teeth and wanted "straight white teeth". He refused orthodontic treatment because of the time involved and chose cosmetic dentistry with porcelain veneers as his favorite option because it could be completed in just a few visits.

Doug, is a CEO of a successful Newport Beach corporation is extremely busy and “time deprived”.  He is a striking man, physically fit and dresses to very professionally, but for decades he has felt a bit uneasy about the appearance of his teeth and smile.  The leader of his business, he needs to show his confidence, but he wasn’t at all confidant about his teeth and smile.

He thought that he would have to have braces to correct his crooked teeth.  Doug consulted with an orthodontist and was told it would take him “about two years” to straighten his teeth with adult orthodontics!  According to Doug, “There is absolutely no time in my life for multiple appointments with an orthodontist.  And two years of treatment is out of the question!”

straight white teeth with porcelain veneers newport beach

Doug got his straight white teeth, beginning to end, in just three weeks time. Now he can smile with confidence!

One day Doug’s wife had attended a lecture that Dr. Huefner and Dr. Juris Bunkis give together in Orange County on the life changing benefits of both cosmetic dentistry and plastic surgery.  Dr. Huefner practices cosmetic dentistry in Laguna Niguel and Dr. Bunkis practices plastic surgery in Rancho Santa Margarita.  At that seminar Dr. Huefner showed photos of numerous life changing smiles he has created with cosmetic dentistry and porcelain veneers.  When Doug’s wife learned that many of Dr. Huefner’s smile makeovers could be completed in just a couple weeks time and only three or four dental visits, she convinced Doug that he should get a cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Huefner.

At the consultation, Doug really emphasized how busy he was and how time was the killer in his life.  If Dr. Huefner did anything for Doug it would have to be done in just a few visits and very efficiently. As far as his goals, Doug said he just wanted straight teeth that are whiter.

After examining Doug, Dr. Huefner outlined a game plan that would enable Doug to get just what he wanted and with four dental appointments.  Doug accepted Dr. Huefner’s recommendations and his treatment was completed in three weeks time!

CEO who can now smile with confidence!

What did Doug have done?  Since Doug had crooked teeth, his upper left lateral incisor is turned in.  Because of that it had excessive gum tissue over it which made that tooth look short.  So, Dr. Huefner did a very simple procedure with the dental gum laser to reshape the excessive gums to a normal shape.  That part of the procedure was completed in 10 minutes with the dental gum laser, no stitches were required, it healed in four days and was relatively painless.  Then, Dr. Huefner placed nine porcelain veneers for Doug and replaced one of his old porcelain on metal crowns with an all porcelain crown.  This enabled Dr. Huefner to create the “straight white” smile that Doug requested.  Doug chose a “softened” smile stile from the tooth shape library and a shade BL2 from the tooth shade guide. The end results for this Newport Beach CEO are great looking teeth with porcelain veneers, so that he can finally smile with confidence!

Replacing old porcelain veneers using natural-looking semi-translucent Empress porcelain veneers orange county

empress porcelain veneers orange county

Marion had Dr. Huefner replace four old porcelain veneers with eight Empress porcelain veneers. Minor laser gum reshaping was done on two of her upper bicuspids to make her gums even. She chose a slightly lighter color, but definitely didn't not want a bright-white smile. The end result of having new porcelain veneers was very attractive and natural looking smile.

Marion, a professional from Orange County had four porcelain veneers placed almost two decades ago because her front teeth were crooked and had multiple fillings.  “The results back then were a huge improvement,” Marion told Dr. Huefner at her cosmetic dentistry consultation.  However one day she tripped and bumped her front tooth, resulting in one porcelain veneer breaking.  “The dentist did a good job trying to repair the veneer, but now it just doesn’t look right.  I know I have to replace it with a new one but before I do that I want to know what other options are available?”

Dr. Huefner asked Marion if she was happy with the color of the teeth she could see when she smiled or would she like them to be whiter?  Marion was very clear on the subject of color.  She wouldn’t mind her teeth being a little lighter, but didn’t want a bright white smile.  “I definitely want teeth that look natural”, she went on to say.  “My old porcelain veneers were pretty good, but what would it take to give me an even better looking smile?”

old porcelain veneers

Marion with her four old porcelain veneers, one that had broken and been repaired. The old veneers had improved her smile but she wanted to replace her old veneers and get an even more attractive smile with the new techniques and materials available today.

Carefully listening to Marion’s concerns and wishes, Dr. Huefner looked closely at Marion’s teeth and smile.  She showed eight to ten teeth when she smiled.  Her side-back teeth leaned in a little and she had more gum tissue showing around her bicuspids than the other teeth.  If she wanted something a lot nicer Dr. Huefner recommended reshaping the gums around the two bicuspids with the dental gum laser to reduce the amount of gums showing.  Then he would place eight porcelain veneers, replacing the four old ones, and get a more even, harmoneous smile.  He would use Empress porcelain, which is stronger than the porcelain she had with her original veneers.  Also Empress porcelain has very beautiful, natural and life-like translucency.  For many cosmetic dentists, like Dr. Huefner, Empress porcelain is their preferred material because of it’s superior strength and natural appearance especially when doing smile makeovers with porcelain veneers.

Marion accepted Dr. Huefner’s treatment recommendations.  Eight Empress porcelain veneers were done.  She chose a “softened” smile style from the LVI smile catalog and a shade BL4 from the tooth shade guide.  Her treatment was completed, beginning to end, in three weeks time.

Afterwards, Marion saw her before and after photos.  She said, “I asked for a moderate improvement, but the new porcelain veneers were a huge improvement over the old porcelain veneers!” Marion was one Orange County lady who was very satisfied with her cosmetic dental treatment and fully appreciated the new techniques and improved materials available with today’s porcelain veneers.

Revitalizing a Worn Crooked Smile with Porcelain Veneers Irvine

Can porcelain veneers fix this Irvine lady’s worn, crooked smile?
worn, crooked, discolored, spaced teeth before porcelain veneers

Janette's teeth were severely worn, discolored, spaced and crooked and she wanted a more attractive and youthful smile. She consulted with Dr. Huefner about the possibility that porcelain veneers could be used to give her a great smile.

This is Janette’s story, why she decided on having porcelain veneers.  Janette is in her early 40s, and lives in and works in Irvine.  The first thing she sees when she looks in the mirror at her smile is that she has worn down her teeth….actually quite a bit!  Just having gotten out of a bad relationship, she was eager to start dating again. She knew that in both social and business situations that her appearance, and that all important first impression are important.  So Janette joined the local gym and also decided to “get her teeth in shape.”

At her cosmetic dentistry consultation Janette said that she knew that she had a “crooked smile and yellow teeth”, and wanted to know if porcelain veneers could be done for her to give her straight, white teeth?  She shared that not only did she want to look better, but a little younger too!

smile makeover with porcelain veneers irvine

Janette had Dr. Huefner place porcelain veneers with a whiter color and more youthful smile design. Some minor laser gum reshaping was done to eliminate some of Janette's gummy smile and make all her gums even. The end result gave Janette a much more attractive smile.

Janette was pleased to hear that Dr. Huefner thought she would be an excellent candidate for porcelain veneers.  Her next two questions to Dr. Huefner were:

  • how many veneers need to be done?
  • how will my smile look when Dr. Huefner is all done?

Dr. Huefner explained to Janette that if she wanted whiter, straight teeth without spaces, and since she showed at least twelve of her upper teeth when she smiled, that he would get the best looking results by doing ten or twelve porcelain veneers.

With regards to how her final smile with porcelain veneers would look, not only does that depend on how many teeth she does, but also the color and especially the design that Dr. Huefner gives her “new teeth”.  Smile design includes both the shape, length and position of each tooth and veneer, but also how the teeth look in relationship to her upper and lower lips when she smiled.  Further examination and discussion with Janette was needed before he could answer that question.

Upon examining Janette’s teeth and smile it was obvious from the wear and shortness of her teeth that she is a bruxer (someone who grinds their teeth, most commonly at night while sleeping).  Her teeth had worn so short that they looked aged and somewhat masculine.  Also her teeth were discolored, spaced and a little crooked. Knowing that Janette wanted her smile to look a little more youthful and feminine, Dr. Huefner was starting to get the feel for the kind of smile he could design for her.

Dr. Huefner explained to Janette that if she wanted more youthful teeth he would suggest making porcelain veneers that were not only whiter, but also longer that her teeth the way they were, a more normal length as they had been when she was younger. Also, the edges of her teeth (porcelain veneers) would look best if they followed her smile line, not canted and leaning to one side as they currently were.

He also pointed out that she showed a little too much gum tissue around her teeth when she smiled.  If she agreed with him and wanted her smile to really look nice Dr. Huefner could used the dental gum laser and reduce some of her gums which would also help make the teeth look more normal in length.

Janette’s immediate response was “I don’t want gum surgery!  I’ve heard how much that hurts.”
Dr. Huefner explained that laser gum reshaping with the dental gum laser is easy, very predictable and has very little discomfort associated with it.  Also unlike the periodontal surgery that she had heard about, laser gum is a very noninvasive procedure and heals up within days.

After thinking quite a bit, Janette decided that if she was going through the effort to do porcelain veneers that she wanted the very best result possible.  Thus, wanting all her teeth to look the same color and “as perfect as they can look”, Janette decided on doing twelve teeth (that included replacing a couple old crowns that didn’t look the same color as she wanted).  She gave Dr. Huefner permission to do the gingival gum recontouring with the dental gum laser.  That procedure took approximately twenty minutes and healed in about five days.  With regards to the porcelain veneers, Janette chose the “enhanced” smile style from the LVI smile catalog and a porcelain shade/color of BL1 from the tooth shade guide.  Dr. Huefner’s smile design nicely followed the curve of her lower lip when she was smiling (following the “smile line“) and her teeth appeared younger, straighter and more feminine.  The end result of Janette’s new smile with porcelain veneers irvine was a beautiful transformation which Janette extremely pleased with.

“Two dentists said porcelain veneers wouldn’t fix my teeth. They were wrong!”

Transforming a Crooked Smile with Porcelain Veneers
discolored teeth laguna beach

Thomas had very discolored and crooked teeth. Also he was missing his upper right bicuspid. Two dentists told Thomas that the treatment Dr. Huefner had recommended wouldn't work for him.

Thomas, in his early 40s, is a hard working and successful business person who lives in Laguna Beach. What with raising a family and working two jobs he just didn’t have the time or inkling to have regular dental visits.  Thus years went by and finally one day he had a tooth ache and had to have a tooth removed.  That got Thomas’s attention and he started coming to our dental practice on a regular basis.  Not being someone who made quick decisions, it took Thomas a couple years to want to address replacing the tooth he had removed with a porcelain bridge.

porcelain veneers laguna beach

Dr. Huefner gave Thomas the great smile that he thought he could never have. Straight white teeth with porcelain veneers and a porcelain bridge to replace his missing tooth.

Dr. Huefner said, “Thomas, before I recommend what kind of dental treatment will best serve your needs, I first need you to answer a couple questions:

  • Do you want to do anything about the color of your other teeth to make them whiter?
  • Your teeth are pretty crooked.  Do you have any interest in having them straighter?
  • You have several side-back teeth that have huge fillings with more decay again.  Do you want to take care of that before them start hurting you or like last time, wait until they need to be pulled?”

Thomas answered that he wanted to have whiter teeth and would love to have straight teeth, but there was absolutely no way he would have braces at his age.  He also said he wanted to take care of any problem teeth so that he didn’t have any more tooth aches and lose any more teeth!

After hearing his answer, Dr. Huefner recommended that Thomas do the following:

  • bleach (teeth whitening) his lower teeth
  • place a 3-unit porcelain bridge on his upper right to replace the mission tooth
  • place porcelain veneers on the remaining upper front and side teeth to make them straight and take care of any cavities or fractures in the them
“Two other dentists said that the porcelain veneer treatment you recommended wouldn’t work”

Again, Thomas wasn’t one to make quick decisions.  He went out and had two other consultations with other dentists and then came back to Dr. Huefner.  “Doc,” said Thomas, “I’d love to do what you have recommended but TWO OTHER DENTISTS told me that porcelain veneers wouldn’t work for me, that veneers can’t be done to make teeth straight!”  Thus Thomas did nothing about his missing tooth, crooked discolored teeth, and the teeth with cavities and fractures.

Another year went by and Thomas came back in for his teeth cleaning.  When Dr. Huefner checked his teeth he discussed his recommendations again with Thomas.  Again Thomas replied that he liked and trusted Dr. Huefner, but he had two other dentists tell him that the treatment Dr. Huefner recommended wouldn’t work for him.

Dr. Huefner brought Thomas into his consultation room and showed him numerous before and after photos of other patients with dental problems similar to Thomas’s, and how he had treated them with porcelain veneers and/or porcelain bridgework.  “I know you’ve been told that you can’t have the kind of treatment that I’ve recommended.  It’s understandable that you don’t want to go forward with something you don’t think will work.  All I can tell you is that if the two dentists you consulted with haven’t been trained in instant orthodontics with porcelain veneers or don’t have experience doing this kind of treatment it is understandable that they would say that.  But I know I can give you a beautiful long-lasting smile with the porcelain bridge and porcelain veneers that I’ve recommended.”

Thomas followed through with doing the the treatment that Dr. Huefner had recommended.  Thomas’s teeth were very dark, a shade C3 from the tooth shade guide.  In the trial smile Dr. Huefner made is temporary veneers and bridge twelve shades lighter, shade A1.  Thomas came back two days later to make the decision as to the final color, and decided to go two more shades whiter, a shade BL4 from the tooth shade guide and in a masculine smile style from the tooth shapes library.

Two weeks later, Thomas received his permanent porcelain veneers and porcelain bridge to replace his missing tooth.  The results were amazing, making Thomas look ten years younger and much more professional.

So, the question “would porcelain veneers work for Thomas” has an answer.  Yes, as all his treatment was done over ten years ago and Thomas just returned last week for his checkup and all his dentistry still looks great and is without any breakage.  Thomas got the straight white teeth and beautiful smile that he wanted and Dr. Huefner has another loyal and very satisfied patient!
